First post is "borrowed" from else where and is about brackets. I'm digging through my saved webpages for some forum threads I created when I ran a Faction Warfare focused forum earlier this year, before I left FW and deleted the database :D
=======================================
Why brackets?
They reduce client lag, improve grid loading and they reduce space clutter. Removing drones for example, makes a huge difference in big fleet fights, especially when fighters are involved.
What are brackets?
Brackets are all the little icons you see in space that lets you select objects like ships, gates, moons, planets, asteroid belts, drones, wrecks and so on.
What are bracket settings?
They are exactly identical to Overview Settings. An Overview Setting is basically just a filter that you can apply either to your Overview, or to what icons you see in space. In the UI they are still called Overview Settings, but they are actually just a filter. This is probably the leading cause of confusion.
Bracket settings also use the State tab, just like the overview. So you can hide or show icons for blues/hostiles/corp members etc as you like.
How do I brackets?
Step 1: Find the Overview, look at the top part where it shows your overview tabs, if you haven't added any you will only see Default listed.

Step 2: Right click on the Default tab and add a new tab.
Step 3: Right click on the triangle in the top left corner of the overview, and select Overview Settings.
Step 4: Configure your overview setting to display everything you want to see on the overview. Save the setting. Deselect EVERYTING under the Drone folder unless you have a good reason not to.
Step 5: Open Overview Settings again. Now configure a setting that will display everything you want to see in space and save it. I recommend you load the setting you just created for overview, but under the State tab make sure to select Alliance members, Corp members, High Standings, Gang Members etc. (Unless you dont want them to show up in space)
Step 6: Save your new setting, give it the same name as the overview setting you want to couple it with but add "bracket" to the end of the name or whatever. This just makes it easier to keep track. (you could just create one universal bracket setting you use on all your tabs as well)
Step 7: Right click on your new tab, select Change Overview Setting and select your newly created setting for the Overview.

Step 8: Right click on the tab, select Change Bracket Setting and select your newly created bracket setting. Bracket settings and Overview settings are the same thing, remember.
Everytime you edit an overview setting, just reselect both settings for the active tab, because it sometimes resets.
A buggy thing that seems to happen to some people is that their tabs reset whenever they open the default tab or any other tab. This seems to work for some people:
Step 1: Load an overview setting into the default tab (you have to use the triangle on the overview, as the Default tab doesn't have the same context menu as other tabs).
Step 2:Configure your tabs as outlined above.
Step 3:Right click on the Overview triangle and save the current Overview Setting.

Overview settings post to go here.

An interesting issue I have with Overview: When I save the contents of one tab, *every* tab gets the same filters :o When I do *not* save them, everything works just fine (ie they work ok even after I relog etc). I wonder what the heck I am doing wrong.
In other news: I still don't understand this Brackets thingy. Why would I need to edit the bracket settings in addition to Overview settings?
-
Brackets are on screen stuff - the white boxes round stations, round other ships etc etc. The less you have on the screen, the less lag you get from their display, vital in busy missions, busy fleet fights, hell even Jita on a Sunday!

Aaaah, thanks, now I understand :)

For those that want it is found here:
http://handsofjustice.co.uk/stuff/feb2011norvb.xml
Download that file by "Right Click>Save as" and place it in your C:\Users\<Your Name Usually>\Documents\EVE\Overview folder (thats on Vista) and then ingame use the Import command on the right click menu of your overview.
The folder can be created, BUT it has to be where EVE saves chat logs, screenies etc in your my docs, if your eve does it elsewhere, then place that file in an Overview folder there.
-
I'll be updating this with Sleepers once Ive added them on Mang - they arent an option in the o/view it seems, so I have to find some and do it myself.
-
Wodner where it should be placed in XP? No such folders at least on my machines, and Windows search finds no Overview folders on the machine (but 48 files with overview, all of them in different EU3 installations :D) .
-
XP its usually My Documents\EVE\Overview (can create the Overview folder its not created right away by eve till you export your own overview settings) but again has to be where eve saves your chat logs, screenies etc.

There appear to be a few bugs around exporting overview settings.
When you do a successful export you should get a popup on success with the name of the folder/file that the export has been saved to.
If you're not seeing the popup - then the problem appears to be related to the Overview settings you're trying to save.
To find out which one is causing the problem - when you see the selection of which settings to export (you'll see a form containing the overview name and a checkbox) uncheck them all - and then check just one & try to save. Success will show the popup showing where it was saved. Failure won't show anything.
When you've found the one that is causing problems - just avoid saving it in future and then you'll be able to save the rest in one go.
-
Its usually the "Default" tab that gives issues. I dont use a default tab so havent had any :D
-
A new one is here:
http://www.handsofjustice.co.uk/stuff/mang050409.xml
Has various tabs including mining one, pvp, drones. Im contemplating a caps tab too, but for now thats on the backburner until I see how cap heavy battles are in Fountain. Missing is my Ganknight setting, but thats basically a tab with only gang not showing as anything not purple is fair game :D
(Updated 1st post with it too)

Would be good if we can get everybody to have this as standard - in addition to those they have setup themselves - as it'll make it easier on corp/alliance ops.

I dont disagree with this - its taken me years to get my overview to this sort of brilliance.
I'll try and keep this topic and the versions uptodate as I find new things to do to it.

this sort of brilliance

:D

BTW: Isn't this closer to the minmatar bike?

Going to be updating mine at some stage this week - including sets for capitals and so on. I'll post here when done.
-
Added a new set.
-
Updated OP with the set im pimping to the alliance at FC level. Get it anyways :D
-
I like my own set too much :-\
-
Set now includes a "fix" that adds Scan probes.
Use it at your own peril, but you can scan for scan probes using the directional button, which you cant without these groups on overview.
NB - this isnt a python injection thing or anything. The overview already gets this info from the server, its just ccp havent added them to overview.xml's yet which actually displays them - despite promises to do so to the csm. So all we have done is added them to the xml ourselves.
-

Unless ofc you uncheck the box 'use overview settings', which sensible ppl have been doing since the time the alphabet was invented. :D

Doesnt show them in the overview though which means no more keeping an eye on brackets - when brackets dont help in laggy fights ;)

Trying this out combined with some of my existing settings - had to delete alot for them to all show in the list but some were lame anyways. I like it so far it works well with my other current sets :)
-
My current set - minus the RVB related tabs:
http://handsofjustice.co.uk/stuff/feb2011norvb.xml
Hope its useful. It comes with the fancy colours of text for ships in space.
Edit: I fail a bit, I havent got probes added to any of these iirc, so you shall have to add them in via the options ingame.
