Title: [Ironbreaker] Building threat
Post by: Gunnarr on September 24, 2008, 08:50:58 AM
I was having some trouble getting the mobs to pay me sufficient attention yesterday in the Sewers.
In my own defense, they were all 2+ levels higher and me and Vacuum, and we both were taking big amounts of damage that had to be healed.....but still!

So, a question to all you other Ironbreakers: which abilities do you feel build good (the best?) threat - for the amount of AP they cost. I'm not too concerned with Grudge as it looks like it's almost always near 100 anyway, except when I use it to regain AP. ;)

My thoughts so far:

Other stuff:

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Anyone got any ideas?

Can't offer insight since I'm not playing a tank, but moving mobs away from squishies is always good practice, even if it doesn't contribute towards a preferential threat situation, since AOE could be a consideration. My brief experience in the lower level sewers instance the other night gave plenty of examples of trash mobs with AOE.

I'll hijack this thread for a question about game mechanics! In particular, 2 handed vs. sword&board weapon loadout. I've recently started a chosen (blasphemy! madness!) and being the huge armored blob of meat, he gets a choice of either wielding a shield and sword/axe or a 2handed sword/axe. But how does this work? While playing with both, I got the feeling my dps was about the same no matter what kind of weaponry I had equipped. If I understand the mechanics, the weapon dps only affects the autoattack damage anyhow, ability damage is only affected by stats. So where do the actual differences show up? Specialization? Certain skills?

FWIW, I definitely FEEL like I do more damage in Tor Anroc with the 2H Axe.
That said, in non-RVR, I always sword & board, as the knockdown with the shield and the grudge buildup from the shield of reprisal is too good.

[RVR]

Build threat by:

1. Snaring
2. Knockbacks - ideally into lava or towards mDPS and away from their healers.
3. Rooting opportunistically (favourite trick is to root someone, then knockback them into lava in TA)
4. Physically standing in the way - ideally in a chokepoint (one of my favourite moments of the past week was Debaser, Beosvir and Vac standing shoulder to shoulder at the outer gate of the T3 keep, healers behind us, standard's flying, Engineer magnetising and completely immovable - top Ironbreaker tastic fun).

[PVE]

Build threat by:

1. Taunt & Shouts
2. Grudging blow
3. Threat building tactics
4. Knockdowns
5. Roots & DPS

We're waitiiiing, unless you mean that you've been drunk this entire time :p

EDIT :
(favourite trick is to root someone, then knockback them into lava in TA)

That is my least favourite trick!

I've noticed that the taunt in pve works like the taunt used to in WoW before they changed it, you get aggro for a bit then the effect wears off and if you haven't gained top hate then they'll switch back. A bit of a shock since the visual effect is the same, not too much of a drama though once you expect it.

You forgot one for [RvR]
1. Being in the way :) (Or snaring, then being in the way)

It gets considerbly easyier when the slots build up and you have tank gear and tanking tactics set up together :)
