Title: Game of Thrones
Post by: Mangala on April 18, 2011, 10:35:38 AM
New HBO show based on a series of books I havent read.  First episode was lastnight in the US, tomorrow in the UK (Sky Atlantic).

Its fucking awesome! I totally recommend downloading/watching on sky.

HBO released the first 14 mins of episode 1 as a trailer:

Books are awesome, very complex story.

Will watch but will be wary until they prove otherwise. George RR Martin says its nice even though they cut several plotlines for easier adaptation.

Honsetly I thought that series was shit. All they did was talk about how they'd done things in the past. They seriously fucked up when they made their decision to not have anything happen for 5 episodes. They should've shifted events around more to better suite the TV-format. Books and film/TV don't have the same dramaturgy and it's a big mistake to think they do.
I read the first book (and started the second book) and found it to be okayish. Biggest problem was the ridiculous characters. They were either super noble, super assholes, super witty, super "intregy" and so on. Only character that I liked (me and everyone else) was Tyrion the Imp. He's in the same league as Gollum in Lord of the Rings. He isn't black or white, but actually making decisions that ain't based on stereotypes. The rest of 'em were rather bland.
I got so sick and tired of the whole "fuck, eat, shit, kill" being the core of the books and series. But I guess that fits HBO like a hand in a glove. Since they're on cable they can show whatever they want. I love cable! The best shows are on cable! But it feels like HBO has OCD, if it can show boobs and vaginas they will squeeze every tit they can find in there. It gets a bit tiresome and repetitive.
The most interesting part of it was the White Walkers and they were hardly explored at all.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoilers content.
Me and my brother used to buy a plate of kebab and eat while watching the show. A month or two after it ended we were in the same restaurant getting kebab again and we both realised that we hadn't seen Game of Thrones for a while. That was the extent of the impression that show made on us. That we ate kebab to it..

To end this rant.. I'd love to see a mini-series adaptation of Wheel of Time with Kate Beckinsale in the role of Moiraine. But at the same time I'd rather not see it cause it would be extremely hard to do those books justice. There are so so many layers that would be very difficult to convey on a screen. I love how most of the characters in it are all grey. Heck even the main good guy is bordeline insane and evil! The Aes Sedai (who're supposed to be good according to Tolkien traditions) are constantly working an angle to get ahead, no matter who they fuck over.

Now I'm going back to bed. Had accidentally left my lock on the laundry room door and my neighbour woke me up to get it removed. Some Pink Floyd in the speakers and I'll sleep like a baby :)

must admit to liking the books but the tv series was a bit meh i suppose we all have an idea of how it should be in our heads and it cant live up to that.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Caradir on December 13, 2011, 07:37:19 AM
you see i like A Song of Ice and Fire  but hate Wheel of time, opinions eh?

What you will realise is the story isnt about the characters you think it is, all the "main" characters in Game of Thrones arent the future of the realms but the past hence the tone of that novel.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Keggi on December 13, 2011, 07:40:31 AM
wheel of time i though was ok up to book 5 or so then it got bogged down and it felt like i was reading every little detail of someones life right down to how many times they scratched there arse.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones

Fuck it. Can't sleep.

Yes the children are the future. I got that much from the books. And Ned getting his head chopped off couldn't have come any sooner. The idiot deserved to die. I think they should've strayed further from the books. The dialogue works in the books but when you take it and put it on a screen it just felt awkward. Like the first scene where we meet Father Lannister. Where he's butchering Santa's reindeer.. That entire scene felt misplaced and odd, and he didn't come off as a badass (which was the point) but rather a clown. They pushed the characters to hard into the "I'm a tough mother fucker!" to hard without any real meat on their bones. They are badass not because their actions says so. But because the makers put in a few scenes forcing the role on them.

I'm guessing the crippled kid will become a wizard, the tomboy a master swordsman/swordswoman hellbent on vengeance and she might learn some magic as well, Geoffrey (what an ugly kid!) will become a tyrant the likes which have never been seen before and throw tantrums every episode, Mother Stark will haunt the Lannisters with her throat and army.. Who am I missing? Cercei will be locked in her room and only brought out when Geoffrey need milk. Older daughter Stark will cry and whine some more with a case of Stockholm's Syndrome but eventually overcome it and see Geoffrey for the retard he is.

Yes Wheel of Time got a bit slow after the sixth or seventh book, Robert Jordan admitted that it didn't work out as he'd planned and got back on track towards the ninthish book. I've read the first eight or nine books about three times (havn't actually had time to read the post-Jordan's death 11th and 12th books yet). They're excellent. There are so many small details in them that when you first read them all they do is flesh out the world. But the second and third time around you start noticing those small things that tell you of future events. Little threads that keeps getting tugged on throughout the books until they blow up and turns into massive stuff. Jordan knew exactly where he wanted to take the books from the very beginning.
There are a few WoT projects in the pipeline. A game or two (one is rumoured to be a MMORPG) and a movie by Universal Pictures. I don't think a movie will do the books justice but a good game might. The world Jordan has built up is just amazing. There are so many details to it making every country, city, people and events come to life. It's one of four IPs I'd love to work with.

I loved Game of Thrones. Trying to read the first one now but lack of time and interest (As it is very much like the series as far as I have read, I feel that I know those parts already) hasn't gotten me far into the book.

What is fun though, the lone Irishman, that is supposed to post an application for this group with us, (He's a lazy fat bastard that never gets his arse in gear) is actually an extra in GoT. The scene where Lady Stark is in the tavern and meets The Imp, you can actually see my friend in the background. :D

He was supposed to get a role in the new season as well. As a man getting a bj at the brothel. Sadly, he wasn't fat or ugly enough. (Which I find hard to believe) They eventually went with a much older guy. Oh well...

Looking forward to the next season though.
