Space Combat is in.

Space Combat confirmed for SW:TOR

"If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles. To learn more, pick up the October 2010 edition of PC Gamer which hits newsstands starting August 17th for screenshots and an exclusive interview or check back with us in the weeks to come."

Sounds similar to SWG's space combat, and certainly better than the PVE space stuff in eve (still wont cause me to leave eve as I get to shoot actual people in that with proper loss mechanics). Still it could be good fun if its a group thing.

yes its a german site.

highlights:

Quote
- It is tunnel styled; you fly along a track and get to shoot at stuff which flies past you.
- They favoured this over a 'free roam' concept because it is more easily accessible and expandable
- All in all it is more of an optional minigame you can play occasionally
- "it doesn't have the complexity of X-wing or Tie Fighter"
- no pvp in space yet
- ship choices are decided by your class
- seems all fully instanced; loading particular missions from your ship's cockpit

i like the look of that, only playing will tell if its fun and/or challenging.

Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)

I truly hope they build on it and make it less of a "ride" and more like tiefighter :D

x-wing vs tie fighter was the first game that me and my mates used to fight with serial cables etc in the bad old days of networking to get our first multiplayer buzz :)

generic missions with 2 voices that each have 5 lines that will start to get annoying after the first day of play, cool!

have fun guys!

was that sarcasm?

It looks like it will work as a nice diversion from the rest of the mmo when you need that instant action fix.  But, if thats what its intended for, Id feel the same about it that I felt when 'jewels' was added to EQ as a mini game.  If you have to play a game inside of your game to stay interested then why are you playing in the first place?

I'll have to see how it fits in.
