Not even halfway down that story yet, but I'm in!

We'd need to plan a dedicated playing night for that  :D

Can you have multiple chars? (one to play in a set group, other(s) to do 'yerownstuff')

As I looked into it.

FHC also has a thread:

I would be like that guy.

I can shell out some money for this today. If this is alpha, it must be even more fun in beta and live. Surely all the extra ARMA sales will force the publisher to give that employee who made the mod the resources to turn this into something awesome.

Some people get it to work with the free version  + paid Arrowhead (15 EUR) others have more luck buying both (25 EUR).
Apparently free version has worse textures and stuff.

i would install in the proper mod path in the win user dir, i corrected your posting accordingly

1. Download both ARMA 2 and ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead through Steam
2. Open both of the games to allow them to install the required files, then close them
3. Download all of the DayZ Mod files into a folder
4. Extract all of the downloaded files into C:\Users\%WINUSER%\Documents\ArmA 2\@dayz\Addons
5. Go to Steam and right click, properties, set launch options on ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead
6. Insert "-mod=@dayz -nosplash" and click OK
6. Open Operation Arrowhead and select to "Launch ARMA 2: Combined Operations

Simple enough, far too hard to find.

Here is a quick rundown on how to get started and how to enjoy this mod:

a: get this and download it, preferably have it open during playing on say a notebook next to your pc
http://ttp2.dslyecxi.com/images/chernarus_big_hq.jpg (http://ttp2.dslyecxi.com/images/chernarus_big_hq.jpg)

b: avoid people. we know they are bad but they are also unpredictable. avoid "ELEKTRO" as thats where people go to kill newbies, aka you.

c: you will spawn somewhere along the coast, my experience is that you will usually spawn somewhere between cap golova and krutoy cap. i would heavily suggest to move to the hills and forests asap.

d: rule of thumb for good stuff: further north

e: go to the hill vysota near chernogorsk, above it you see two little dots along a road. in one of these barns you will find a hunting rifle with a scope, cz-550, or a lee enfield rifle. take it.

To further coordinate things:
I suggest you to move towards kozovka, we should all get and meet around green mountain to make a group push to the airfield. Airfield is a place where ALOT of good items spawn, think ak47 with optics, and from there on we can also roam further towards devils castle and the military bases(more loot) around gvozdno.

Needed beans. Found a guy who was friendly, offered him .45 rounds for a tin of beans.

He declined.

Blew the back of his head off with the Enfield (terriloud) and took his beans.

Sweet sweet beans.

did anybody get it to work yet?

I downloaded the 26 files in the installer folder of the Sweden mirror and unzipped them to the right folder. But when I start the game, I get 2 errors and I cant join a game...
And yes, I adjusted the steam launcher...
And yes, I also moved the non-zipped files to the addon folder...

Apparently starting as Combined Operations when prompted fixes this...

So after being hunted by some noob killing bandito (tosspot)

Saffy and i finally managed to find each other and then messed up any attempt at finding Bethor, however we werent helped by Bethor going East instead of West (he made up for it by finding new weapons whilst Saffy and I managed to be low on ammo)

we did that. Using roads to navigate was a great idea until zombie horde caused us to go cross country ;)

I do think Garry and I were too cautious though, by avoiding towns.
Yes, we didnt get hurt by z's (much), but we also eliminated many of our chances to find loot, if only ammo and bandages to kill moar z's. But then, our hope was to link up with you asap (which failed).

found a sniper rifle
than found out that shooting in town is not the best idea ever. It actually is a very bad idea.
gun being used being a sniper rifle didnt help much

so i had a winchester, switched that for a sniper rifle i had on me when i died
i had a 1911 pistol with 0 clips left (i emptied 2)
and around 25 Z down

Shooting a (loud) gun aint always the best course of action  :)

Actually, when one z from a larger group spotted Garry and me, we lured it away from town and killed it there. Worked well...

So I'm up and running.
First time around I spawned south of Prigorodky and got shot by a player who left two zombies to feast on me.

Second time around I spawned south of the eastern outskirt of Chernogorsk, passed Prigo heading east and and made it halfway from Cherno to Rog.
Lost connection to server, but I should be somewhere just south of Pusta on top of the mountain. Was just about to cross over the top of the mountainy bit as the server started acting up.

Plan is to head along the north of the Dam to Rog. If I die along the way, I'm just waiting for one of you to die so we can walk together. =P

I feel alone. I'm scared. I trust no one.

Testing Tapatalk as I can't sleep due to recent zombie activity.

Is that all you can do or can you go through their backpack as well? Bit confusing.

Doing the ARMA II OA tuts helps quite a bit, even though they're not the best thought out ones at times.
Don't bother with the original ARMA II tuts, they suck balls. OA ones are much better.

And in Arma II you need to set your resolution and 3d resolution to the same value, otherwise everything is fuzzy/blurry.

Tent (http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tents):

Quote
Tents are items that offer a source of storage players. They do not save from server to server but on the originating server they were deployed on. Deployed tents cannot be stolen, however the items inside can be.

Tents seem pretty useless unless you have a big bunch of wacko's that play shifts around the clock and someone always covers the tent.

I think it's important to manage your expectations. The game is in alpha, a surprisingly good alpha, but alpha nonetheless. Servers are often full or will crash. Getting on in weekends may literally take hours if you're unlucky. And then the server may very well crash. You might randomly lose your life, stuff or location at any time.

Getting together with friends ingame may take hours as well and once you do it may not last very long. Especially if I'm around armed with a sniper rifle. It's a tough environment with little sense of direction at first.

The developer of the mod has said he has/had no intention of creating a balanced environment. It can be a tough environment to survive in.

Having said that, I was surprised at how exciting running around on your own for an hour can be. Without meeting anyone. And only seeing zombies at a distance.
You will feel betrayed when another player is headed towards you, followed by a few zombies clawing at his heels and he will simply shoot you down so he can keep running and you can entertain the zombies for him. And you will feel excited when you're stuck in a barn that has zombies crawling all around it, with nothing but a few empty tin cans to distract them and try and get out quietly. Spotting other players in game will raise your heartbeat, because you can't trust anyone. Did they see you as well? Are they friend or foe? If friendly, are they lying? What weapons do they have? Do they want yours?

So, yes. It's worth it. But you need to be aware of the whole alphaness and the fact that it is in no way meant to be a 'fair' game.

I will most likely change my mind after I get raped in the face, but I think I'll try hailing them on voice comms first if avoiding them is imposibble. But be agressive about it and tell them to leave or die. Not going to trust anyone to not shoot me.

Might explain the previously unexplained camerashake Garry (and myself before I died) is experiencing?

Also: Winny nerf is a total bummer  :'(

Fired a shot with winny to test the sound; It didnt seem that much louder. It did atract a zombie though, but I was on a steep hill, so w.e.  :D
What I'm more concerned about is the nerf of the power. Haven't tested that yet.

I think Winnie sprouted my fondness of chocolate ladies.

So I think that was Msta we wandered into. Reckon it was a random sniper or their backup eye in the sky?

No clue. Doesnt explain why we didnt hear snipershots earlier, as they clearly needed backup before. What I do know is that we've learned a lesson in the consequences of overeagerness...

Managed to get on last night, european server pitch black so after a bit i manage to aggro som zoombies and die (got one of them on a lucky shot hehe)

Try again today, move around cherno not knowing what to do so venture in a bit in the outskirts. Find a house and look, hey some loot.
Manage to somehow drop and not get back my ammo!!!!

Oshit...

So out i go to find some ammo (or a winny since i had some for that)
Manage to find a house with a lee enfield but one zoombie seems to have aggroed on me darn, shoot. Dead.
Then a bazillion zombies come at me (i'm indoors) ran out of bullets pretty fast haha and died again. So will see when i have some time to try next.

I'd say rule one should be "don't drop all your ammo"
 :P

But yes my intention is to get away from the coast. But if I want to be able to group up with you guys I think knowing where the hell I am could be advantageous :)

Post when you're next going to be online and we can hop on Mumble to help you along.
Day Z can be rather confusing in the beginning.

For now it's best to keep the coastline in your back and crouch run inland.
Don't forget to do the OA tutorials, they help a lot.
Avoid towns like the plague and try to get to high country. From there you will usually be able to spot the larger cities, lighthouses, landmarks, etc that will help to pinpoint where you are.

Also, if you spawn on the beach and you first cross the railroad and then the regular road, you spawned all the way west on the map.

Moved around a bit, saw a stone, shot a zombie and hid its body (couldn't figure out if it had anything on it haha) and think I'm north-west of Pusta (should be somewhere there at least, don't think I moved that much further tbh)

Where are you guys mainly holed up? and I'll try to move there in a leisurely pace :)

Rog is east of Pusta iirc (castle on a hill in some woods - water at the base of the hill its on to the west) and thats a good place as we all know were it is.

Also on some servers its a good place for loot.

Had a geest game the other say. Me an 2 guys were playing dayz. We were close to cherno and would meet on the beach. I found One of the guys soon enough and we were going for the other guy walking along the beech. And we met hun soon enough. sproke hun on voice. And he was where. We were right next to you. And we GoT the reply. ah i see you. Who is the other guy. And we were like WTf. Apparently some other guy spawned between us. Needless to say we shot the guy and took his stuff. But ut was Funny as hell.

Later me an One of the guys were in a building in cherno. And he sales me. Is that you. Followed Bh. Dude Wbt die you shoot me. Apparently the guy WHO shot my friend only saw One of us. So i popped hum with my 1911pistol. And thats how i got a camo suit and a remmington with atrached flashlight.

I really love this game.

Gary Gannon Spends Some Time With DayZ On E3's Showroom Floor

http://www.gamebreaker.tv/pc-games/e...howroom-floor/ (http://www.gamebreaker.tv/pc-games/e...howroom-floor/)

Sum up:
Please bare in mind that all listed things are unconfirmed/rumors/speculations!

- Dean Hall was taken off arma 3 team to focus on dayZ exclusively
- more units sold of arma in the past 60 days than they have sold in the entire life time of arma
- they currently want to keep it alpha
- they want to make it easier to install (get the mod into a client version)
- servers: there may be the idea as a long term goal to build something like the tranqulity servers (similar to EVE online servers)
- they internally talk about one single large world/server everyone is on (MMO)
- they want to take some of the arma 3 tech (that wont be ready for the release of arma 3) and might be using it to build downloadable clients
- mod to work pretty well with the arma 3 internal build
- they are considering using the arma 3 engine to release a stand alone version of the mod (which may take place in WW2/1944 invasion)
- they think about charging for stand alone version but for a much lower price point (less than for arma 2 and OA)
- making the map even larger than it is
- every building enterable
Title: Re: surviving-in-day-z
Post by: peo on June 08, 2012, 09:36:07 AM
Sounds like a good plan. Think 1 persistant server where players can do everything from roaming endlessly to building "empires". Like Eve but completly without high sec :)
Include some sort of industry etc and a really seriously large map (western us from California to Texas or something) random spawn within the zone you died (to enable Groups) apart from the first spawn when you choose one region to spawn in... Meh im silly

I hope that at some point it'll be possible to found safehavens like in The Walking Dead comics. Small barricaded settlements with multiple people 'living' inside from where you can launch your scavenging runs. Maybe even grow some beanstalks. Big herds of zombies.

I dont know where i heared or read it. but apparently there is one developer from ARMA 2 helping out with the development of DayZ. So thats good news (and current build kinda sucks, because the error currently in it that keeps loading a char)

also that there is going to be a mod like that (or DLC) for ARMA 3 AND that arma 3 supports 200 player maps!

i like these developments

They need to add a group respawn feature within x kilometres. You don't have to spawn in one spot, but trudging from one end of the map to another to meet up with people and then have 5 minutes of fun before you die, is a bit meh.

Haven't been playing myself, but I'd like to have more Msta moments. :)
