Jumpgate Evolution MMO
« on: December 02, 2008, 06:58:07 PM »
Came across some concept art for what looks like a patch/expansion to Jumpgate.

Jumpgate was the first MMO I actually ever really wanted to play. I was a Privateer addict back in the day, must have played that game through three or four times, and then I played Tie Fighter and fantasised about the Privateer game on the Tie Fighter engine. Yes, really. It would have been awesome. I had a 386, what can I say?

Anyway, I was within Oz's then primitive internet back then and was a poor uni student, so I merely got to stare wistfully at Jumpgate's website via dial-up at uni. Anyone play it? Or heard anything about this patch/expansion?

A bit cheeky of me to ask, perhaps, given all the EVE threads I see here lately. Nevertheless.
DC Universe Online (EU PC): Psilance, Psion Hero, Noctirian, Sorcerer Villain
Neverwinter: Theron Dios, Control Wizard (Beholder)
Star Trek Online: Eric@TaithZero
SWTOR: Tarkanian, Sith Assassin (Progenitor) (Inactive)

Cons: Consensual pvp. Level based for skills and such. Cant fly huge ships, mainly stay in smaller frigate type things. Sharded universe (Multiple servers, unlike EVE's single cluster world); Twitch gameplay in an MMO is very tricky to handle, just look at how much ping STILL matters in FPS games online and then extrapolate...

Pro's: Joystick flight. Space is very shiny. Procedurally generated pve content, rather than "fetch me 20 space boar livers". Player run economy - make it like eves and it'll be good. Base it in the game as part of a no death losses thing and the economy will really become the AH in space.

I applied to the Beta. New waves get invited in every so often, I am waiting. Just to see for myself if the cons list is something I can reduce for myself personally :)

I think that the lack of joystick support is what makes eve run smooth. Think calculations on positions are much easier that way -> less load on server.

But me knowing nothing of programming whatsoever, i could be terribly wrong.

If you want to know what this currently looks like, look at the E3 gameplay video's. there a bunch of links in the codemasters jumpgate general forum to these.

no idae but if it is id imagine netdevil dying as that would be 2 MMOs that failed with Auto Assault not lasting very long for them.
"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)

Nevermind:

Quote
"A sequel to the space combat MMO Jumpgate, seems ominously troubled. In beta and due to be released June 2009, it was suddenly pulled. "It is clear that the product needs more time to meet its objectives" said ND President Scott Brown."

Just pushed release back - either way I wont be in country when it releases in the suggested Spring 2010 in the new PC Gamer...

Still uncertain about this - its level based with "quests" for want of a better term, twitch combat, pvp zones rather than pure ffa (or even pure factional war), they have seemingly moved towards the wow economy model rather than the real-worldesque of eve (which they touted originally) and generally the graphics wind me up (way to shiny and yes I know eves are shiny, but not THAT shiny :D). I know the levelling gets you bigger ships apparently, but I'd rather build (or get my shit built).

Codemasters involvement as publisher scares me, even though they havent annoyed me with LOTRO :)
