Was announced at GDC this week.
They have an AMA on Reddit too, but not answering until today:

yup 5
seems it has a multiplayer aspect to it which could be awesome as long as its returning to more like the olden days of Sim City
-
Yeah an MP aspect combined with the difficulty of the SC franchise (except the abortion that was Societies) and the mod-ability of SC4 will be brilliant to play.

dont think i enjoyed any more than 2K, not to say ones after are bad just not as much fun to me.
-
2K was excellent way back when - and still is tbh, a very pure form of the game.
However for me, 4 (deluxe) is tops - once you have modded the arse out of it.

true
the problem i had with 4 was the transport link issues it was just WTF but they sorted that out
-
Speaking of Mods.
After seeing the announcement I reinstalled SC4 on steam, and 3 days later im STILL installing mods before I try giving it a solid play.
-
i kinda like sim city on the tablet when im bored in bed (and when i was in the hospital :D)

Lead designer Stone Librande confirmed that SimCity would be an internet-dependent experience. Players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even if that wasn’t the point of purchase. The always-on connection becomes necessary with the game’s emphasis on multiplayer and regional impact, and the use of a global economy that all players can influence.
Is bad?

Is fucking annoying.

seriously wondering if game developers are on crack and dont care what the customer wants
-
Quite simple really.
Forcing online play can reduce piracy.

Forcing online play will reduce sales.
fixed that for you ;)
alienating the purchaser to protect your bottom line isnt the way to do it

The vast majority doesn't care that much imo. People still play wow you know ;) despite online play :P

Wow is an ONLINE MMO
Simcity is historically a singleplayer game, thats the launch purchaser, only when people have tried the multiplayer component of it will it sell as that, until then they are alienating the people who want to install their singleplayer game and play without the need to be online.

it forces people who crack games to be a more inventive, so i'll give it a week longer before the game gets cracked.
The always online option is for me a reason not to buy because of too many bad experiances with DRM games. If i buy a game, i want to play it, and not get a message the DRM servers are down.
the comparison with WoW is not valid, as its an online only game, and i got extra time for unexpected server downs if i remember correctely from when i played wow

SimCity | Gameplay Strategy Video #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWLClUwAHGc#ws)

Once they get their paychecks, they'll try to spend their hard earned money to get happyness
Yup, sounds realistic.
-
So yeah.
LOL EA.
Totally not giving them my money.
I'll stick to Cities in Motion & SC4 thanks.

IT looks cool, its just i hate EA and as they even had probs with servers at launch of a non MMO im not gonna throw my $$ at them (also cause they arent on steam but on their own crappy platform)
Also EA has quiet a trackreckord of not supporting their classic games with DRM-ish things so you give them $$ and you cant even play your game.
DIE EA DIE
-
I shall join you on the EA hate bandwagon that I am equally fond of riding.
*hops on*
