AUGUSTA, GA. -- A Marine reservist is sent to the hospital after he's stabbed by a suspected Black Friday shoplifter at Best Buy. Deputies say the shoplifter was trying to get away with electronics when the Marine reservist stepped in.
Cpl. Phillip Duggan is recovering from a stab wound in his back after investigators say Tracy Attaway stabbed him after the Marine reservist stopped him from getting away.
All week it's been people lined up outside of Best Buy for Black Friday. On this Black Friday though, deputies cars lined the outside of the building after investigators say a Marine reservist is stabbed by an attempted shoplifter.
"It was like wow! I can't believe he pulled that knife," Retired Marine and Toys for Tots volunteer, Larry Frelin said. "But those Marines acted instinctively."
Larry Frelin and a group of Marines were outside the store collecting Toys for Tots when it all started.
"We heard some noise going on in the inside and then we were thinking people were fighting over gifts," Frelin said. "We were thinking how ridiculous can that be?"
But it wasn't crazed shoppers, investigators say it was one attempted shoplifter, Tracy Attaway. Store officials say he was trying to steal a laptop and cameras before he was stopped by an employee. It was then he pulled out a knife and rushed for the door to get away with the goods.
"They jumped on top of him and they pulled him down," Frelin said he witnessed. "It took about five different people on top of him, but unfortunately he had a knife. He brought the knife around and managed to get it in the back of the Marine."
Shoppers continuously came up to News 12's crews in disbelief anyone would do that in Augusta on the so-called busiest shopping day of the year.
"I'm really surprised to hear that," Black Friday shopper Shayla Myers said. "I saw the soldiers here this morning and hearing one of them got stabbed is a little scary."
A little scary for Myers, but she's not surprised the knife didn't scare away the Marines.
"They are true heroic people so it's kind of...not expected of them, but it's nice to know they would do that," she said.
One more thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, especially for Best Buy.
The Toys for Tots coordinator tells News 12 Cpl. Duggan is feeling better now, but might require a few stitches.
Best Buy said they were watching him on surveillance cameras when he went into the bathroom with camera boxes. Later, they noticed him stuff a laptop in his pants and that's when they confronted him and he pulled out the knife.
A Best Buy employee was also injured in a scuffle with Attaway, but was not stabbed.

A Dutch-Malaysian expedition to the remote "Heart of Borneo" have turned up more than 160 species previously unknown to science — and perhaps more importantly, enough DNA samples to figure out how more than 1,400 species in one of the world's hottest hot spots for biodiversity are related.
"It has been a successful expedition," the project's leader, Menno Schilthuizen of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, said in a news release from the center, based in the Dutch city of Leiden. Forty researchers from Naturalis and from Sabah Parks, a Malaysian conservation group, journeyed to Borneo's Mount Kinabalu last month to survey the area.
Scientists collected 3,500 DNA samples during the two-week expedition. Back in the lab, Naturalis' biologists will analyze the genetic code to generate family trees for all the collected plants, fungi and animals. A close look at the relationships among the novel species found on Kinabalu, compared with the wider spectrum of species throughout Borneo, could tell researchers whether Kinabalu's species evolved long ago or only recently.
"It's the first time that such an extensive expedition will go to Borneo with evolution as their main focus," Schilthuizen said. "We are following in the footsteps of Alfred Russel Wallace, who formulated a first version of the theory of evolution on Borneo."
Naturalis said spiders and fungi accounted for the largest numbers of new species found on Kinabalu. Other new species included true bugs, beetles, snails, stalk-eyed flies, damselflies, ferns, termites and possibly a frog.
The expedition came across an "El Dorado" for fungi, said József Geml, one of the researchers. "While the plant and animal life of this mountain has been the focus of numerous research projects, Kinabalu has remained terra incognita for scientific studies on fungi," Geml said. "It is difficult not to feel overwhelmed by this task. One of the manifestations of this diversity comes in the endless variety of shapes and colors that sometimes are truly breathtaking."
The researchers expect that the DNA studies will result in a scientific publication about evolution in the Heart of Borneo within a year.
The Godfather: He is big -- 4 meters tall and over 4 tons in weight. He is the "Godfather". I have visualized this scene many times. I have checked and rechecked my equipment and decided upon the camera and lens combination. I now relax and control my breathing as they come in to view. The next ten minutes are a bliss of forgetfulness as I zone in to the task at hand; only one moment stands out. He stands still before me in all his magnificence, raising his trunk filled with the red Kalahari dust. In one fluid movement he sprays his forehead and for one brief moment he is covered in the magic of dust and light. (© Peter Delaney/National Geographic Photo Contest)
