Pirate Bay is sold

Yes, it's true.

News reached the press today in Sweden - The Pirate Bay might get aquired by Global Gaming Factory X AB.

A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either!

TPB is being sold for a great bit underneath it's value if the money would be the interesting part. It's not. The interesting thing is that the right people with the right attitude and possibilities keep running the site.
As all of you know, there's not been much news on the site for the past two-three years. It's the same site essentially. On the internets, stuff dies if it doesn't evolve. We don't want that to happen.

We've been working on this project for many years. It's time to invite more people into the project, in a way that is secure and safe for everybody. We need that, or the site will die. And letting TPB die is the last thing that is allowed to happen!

If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.

The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets - quite the opposite. Now we're fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It's win-win-win.

The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy!

"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)

And the world patiently waits while the next batter steps up to the plate. So long Pirate Bay. It was a good run.

Do you guys (who obviously only download non-illegal stuff) use programs to protect your ip-adresses to remain hidden?

No need. It's not the downloading that's illegal, it's the sharing of copyrighted content.
So as long as you remove completed torrents from the list you're fine. Though some of these services require you to upload as much as you download (and it's considered good manners to do so if it's not required...)

i have only used places like pirate bay a couple of times usually like caradir says to try before i buy (music and movies) i prefer to have a hard copy of music/games/movies.

the music/games/movie industry only seem to go after people that download tons of stuff if they prosecuted everybody that downloads stuff it would cost them more than what they loose from people downloading rather than buying.

For Warcold:
http://www.nu.nl/internet/2023867/gratis-downloaden-moet-strafbaar-worden.html
(Sorry guys, the article is in dutch)

Just to prove that (in NL) downloading illegal content is permitted. (According to the article the dutch government is exploring the possibilities to make downloading copyrighted content without paying for it illegal)
For now, you're allowed to assume that the person offering the content owns the rights to distribute it (since it can be hard to tell if this actually is the case)
Distributing content that you don't own the rights of, IS illegal. Obviously, you can still debate the morality of downloading stuff you assume is copyrighted....  :P
