Another forum I use is full of Aion beta testers, and one has this to say after he recently got in:

Quote
I have played enough of the beta now to question if Aion is going to be worth dropping money on come September. My first complaint is that the introduction to the game is just fucking boring. I REALLY wish the "start as a generic class and advance later" thing would just die already. EQ2 did the smart thing and did away with it completely. If someone wants to play a Ranger then let them play a damn ranger. Don't make them do hours of boring "scout" shit first. This is VERY noticeable if you have interest in two classes of the same type. Lucky for me I didn't want to test a Assassin and a Ranger. Talk about a chore.

Once I finally got my Ranger/Gladiator and Chanter to 10 the game play picked up a bit. That made me feel better. My next complaint showed up though. The quests are all as generic as the starting classes. It is just a non-stop stream of kill and collect quests. I prefer this to endless grinding but not by much. Class game play is going to be VERY important if this continues all the way to max. Which I hope it does not.

My current feelings for the game are just kinda mixed right now which is a shame considering that as a new MMO it should be all fresh and good times even if the suck starts later. I loved the first part of AoC as a example. Even a horrible game like that managed to hook people at least for a little while. I don't get that with Aion at all which makes me think I should just save my time and money and hold out for something else. The end game of Aion might be a total blast with the pvp and sieging but if the road to that is just dull then they will lose a ton of potential business. I have to September though so might as well keep testing things out and see if things turn around.

I'll dig up more and varied opinions ofc :)

There is a closed beta event from july 17 to july 20 going on but unlucky me is working 12 hour nightshifts this weekend. :(
Did manage to get about 30 mins of at least making a char and killing a couple of mobs for a couple of quests...
The character creation have tons of choices for customizing your character look and you can go advanced and tune all sorts of stuff. One thing annoying me was that you had 4 voices to choose from but the option to test each of them didnt seem to work for me so i had to enter the game then remake characters until i found one i could live with.
I am hoping to see a little more than just the starting zones before this event ends so unless i am completely exhausted on moday morning when i get home from last shift i will probably play for a while and hope it doesnt end early that day. I want to at least have a try at flying!  :D

You can order from ncsofts own store as well. Serial code and the benefits of preordering but no box: https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl
Head start is tomorrow so dunno if you would get the code before that.

Early character creation started last night and i have reserved a warrior and a scout on the Gorgos server. :)

Going Elyos and only lag i have experienced was on one server right after open beta started. Took ages for npc's to respond to you clicking on them so i started on another server.
Gorgos looks like it might be one of the higher populated servers. Could be because the RPers, UK and some Dutchies and Spanish peeps have unoficially voted for that to be the server they go to. At least the russians and spanish people that are going to bitch about not having their own servers and plan to not speak english in regional chats are supposed to be going elsewhere.

People making Asmodians have to keep in mind they might not be able to play with friends on some servers as there are more asmodians that elyos on most servers and restrictions on asmodian vs elyos balance might kick in. Already some guilds have been split in two because not all their asmodian members could make headstart chars on same server.

think i will go Elyos then i like being the underdog, think i may create a mage and go down the sorcerer path.

does headstart chars carry over to live ?

Corrupted downloads sucks.  :-\

Yes headstart characters will carry over to live. And preorders could also create 2 characters 2 days before headstart even began to reserve names, but it wasnt possible to go past the character creation screen and play.

think i have the dl working now i managed to find a link to the ncsoft launcher and it seems to be dl'ing through that at the moment.

i had tried dl'ing it through gamershell and had tried it 4 times yesterday from 4 different locations but none worked either said corrupted files or empty folder when i tried opening them. /sigh

I was number 1200 in the logon que for Gorgos and it took 2 hours before i could get on. And before i got in there was over 2000 people in the que.
I had no lag problems so guessing they had set low limits on server population and will increase it when they know the servers can handle it. Also as it took a while to get on i was right behind the main group and didnt have the problems with people stealing my mobs.

Oh and now when i tried logging in there was no que at all. :)

well got 2 chars to lvl 10 warrior/gladiator and scout/assasin gameplay seems straight out of a final fantasy cut scene.

the usual go kill this collect that quests interspersed with story setting type cutscenes.

must say i like the fighting animations are very fluid and was surprised that your actual char says a few things when casting spells and using bandages.

think i will be sticking with this for a while and will see how it goes.

not had one bit of lag myself and thats with loads of ppl in my area.

not joined a legion/kin/guild yet i cant decide what to use as my main .

only thing as a downside they dont have a friend/guildmate search box like they do in lotro/wow/war or i have not found it yet.

Any thoughts on the fact I'm hearing itsa grindfest from the get go? Any substance to those claims?

Also, have you tried CO? How do you compare the combat to it?

I'm passing on Aion purely because I don't like the subject material. However, I am interested to see what people think about it.
Title: Re: Aion: Tower of eternity launch date
Post by: Dlarah on September 22, 2009, 07:25:54 AM
Yea i dont know what mmo CO is like, but i have yet to see one where you dont grind. Do you get everything for free there?  :D

Yes there is lotsa grinding if you skip all the sidequests and expect to level purely on the main story. Right now at lvl 17 and a half i need to do a couple of repeatable quest as i ran out of soloable quests to do and am waiting for the Legion to do some groupquests later today. These repeatable quests reward you with coins that can be handed in for some armor and weapons so it doesnt feel like a complete waste.
I should get new quests in a level or two as i know of a few npcs i saw had quests i couldnt take yet, and i can soon start on a new zone. :)

Apparently there was some levels at early 20's where grinding mobs was the only option, but that was before the 1.5 patch they applied just before this launch. I am guessing most of those grindfest claims are from people that played on chinese version thats been out for a year or from early closed beta just before the patch was added.
I think more mmos should launch in china a year in advance to remove bugs and see where theres missing content.  ;D
Only problem is the class balance can be a bitch as they all seem to prefer assassins. I saw some weird class poll where there were tons of assassins and certain classes was hardly played.

It's Korean. It'll be a grindfest.

I am inclined to agree.

And Dlarah, I do think theres a differance between 'go fetch me 10 boar intestines' and just grinding mobs to level. I'd rather quest grind then mob grind. How does Aion handle levelling?

Also, my comment about CO was purely from a combat perspective. CO's combat is very fast paced, with lots to do. Is Aion similar, or is it a click on a mob till it dies affair?
Title: Re: Aion: Tower of eternity launch date
Post by: Dlarah on September 22, 2009, 08:35:15 AM
Not tried CO so dont know how this combat is compared to that. Clicking on mobs and they die? err no... but ive taken ranger wich feels kinda gimped until 16 as you play a melee scout up until lvl 10 then get your bow and 2 bow skills so its a mix of melee and ranged for a few levels.

My leveling have been mostly kill x mobs up until now. About to start on the 4th round of that repeatable quest and that will get me into next level so i can go round looking what new quests i can get and i will have enough to buy 2 pieces of armor or a weapon. And as a bonus ive had lots of drops from these mobs i can use in my alchemy. :)
Title: Re: Aion: Tower of eternity launch date
Post by: Keggi on September 22, 2009, 08:36:58 AM
the starter area is to get you to lvl 10 then you go to the next area i did every quest in the starter zone and reached lvl 10 no bother didnt grind anything.

all mmo's i have played work the same way but i cant speak of things past lvl 10 in this one but its fun so far.

only real gripe so far is the idiots that refuse to speak english in general when you can create another language channel in chat.

think i will look for a legion today as i decided to make my assasin my main.

they gave a 60 second warning that servers were coming down but the 60 seconds only lasted about 20.

I love those countdowns. I always imagine them in the ED-209's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed209) voice.

SERVER WILL SHUT DOWN IN 20 SECONDS.

Come on then chaps. A little over a week in now.

What are your overall impressions?
Title: Re: Aion: Tower of eternity launch date
Post by: Keggi on September 30, 2009, 12:48:29 PM
hmm well at the start you had private shops in my view a bad thing these you could set up and allow ppl to buy things from you while you were afk.

this meant ppl could just leave a char logged in all day and night and go to work and so on but this lead to masses of them in every quest hub and didnt help the server queues which were something like 4 hours long.

so they put in a fix where private shops can only be afk for half an hour so helped the queues but there are still queues i think ncsoft saw what happened with warhammer and dont want ghost town servers after a couple of months.

the game has the best char creation i have ever seen this is also a problem when you see chars with heads 5 times the normal size with afros lol

i like how the game handles fps i get is between 40 and 160 depending where i am and most areas have lots of ppl in them so far

classes i have one of each class and one of each sub class..

mage=sorcerer damage dealer(and some cc) + spiritmaster damage+pet
warrior=templar tank + gladiator damage dealer
priest=cleric primary healer+ chanter  buffer (mines has 6 buffs to give at lvl 20)
scout=assasin mellee dps+ranger ranged dps with some cc

the quests are your usual find and kill and delivery quests there is also repeatable quests which you can do 100 times all in the same day if you want.

not had to grind so far with my highest lvl(20) all solo play but at lvl 17 or so the first group quests kick in these are campaign quests which are seperate from the normal quests.

not joined a legion yet cant seem to decide between them all ,its like im a bit nervous of new ppl after being in the same guild with the same ppl for so long.

there is alot of goldseller /w but you can put them in a block list be warned do not reply to goldsellers even to say f/off it gets you perma banned i have heard.

i like the combat nice animations you get chain skills which trigger after a main skill is used.

as im only lvl20 cant say what its like after that i hear there is no real pve at endgame but then it is a pvp game.
there are instances but dont know how many and what lvl they are.

so far i enjoy it.

oh lots of trolls WOW kiddies and foriegn chat in general which keeps getting shouted down at least on gorgos server.

The ques are annoying but the afk shops being limited to 30 mins and the new servers being added have helped i think. I am wondering if the ques will get even shorter once the free 30 days is over.

As soon as you hit 25 you can do a short chain wich lets you enter the abyss. Every mob or player and some quests here gives abyss points wich is what you need for buying gear and some skills after lvl 30. Also abyss points you get are counted towards your legions(if in one) contribution points and so your legions rank on the server. Abyss points are spent like money so you can loose your personal rank if you spend it all.

You can grind mobs and do repeatable quests or kill players for the abyss points depending on what you prefer. Sometimes it is possible to grind without being ganked but the threat is always there. You can keep an eye on minimap for enemies as player enemies show as red squares while hostile npcs show as red dots but it is hard to tell if the enemy player is hard or not as levels show as ?? so he could be below you or 5+ higher and impossible to hit.

Roaming gangs hunting for lone questers are fun when you are part of it and not so fun when you are the lone quester.  :P

Sometimes both sides gather bigger groups but the fights i have been in would just end up as one group hugging a tower with friendly npcs that oneshots your enemies and then you only get a kill now and then if some poor guy got dragged into your group by a templar(aoe skill that kinda works like the one those chaos dudes with funny hands in warhammer have).

There are fortresses and some lesser artifacts to be captured but not many can do this yet as mobs holding it are lvl 40 and most players are just starting to get past 25. There are higher level mobs and fortresses in another part of the abyss for when we get max level.

In the 25-28 range you can do a instance that is supposed to be a training ground for taking fortresses and artifacts. It seemed easy when i did it with legion but i often see people looking for non idiots for doing this. They must have had some weird groups...

I am worried that grinding abyss points will get boring in the long run after hitting lvl 50 even if the gear looks awesome.  :(

for everyones information the gold farmers/botters will ruin this game i was doing quests in one area and counted 15 botters in a small area makeing doing quests there very time consuming.

I agree at release he was King Tit, however the past year or so hes been pretty good, his kin organise events for the server, from chicken runs (epicaly funny to watch)to Bree hide and seek (CM hated that one, said their servers couldnt cope).
