Same, more so when I get into the MP campaign.

Loving the TW games like I do, so much of my time is going to be spent conquering the world (again!)

Just got an email from Amazon saying this will dispatch earlier than expected - 4-6 March.  Which, given Amazon's ability to deliver games after release, means its probably already available :)

Hmm, I should order at amazon too, much cheaper than in holland (say 60-70%)

Given up on any demo being released.

I'll wait until the game goes live in 2 weeks to play it.  Makes the anticipation all the sweeter.

blame Dawn of War 2 requiring steam for installationand activation took me an hour just to be able to play the game, methinks they servers are straining with the patch and release of E:TW demo ;)
Title: Re: Empire Total War

Played it. Jesus, ETW is going to be epic. Amazing detail - admittedly i played on high settings with my rig, but seeing crewmen board ships and fight ont he decks for control is just droooool worthy.

hmm. apparently i've effectively got 7 days to play E:TW. (apparenly released the 3rd on steam, and eve will be released the 10th)

cant they invent 48 hour days... (preferably with 8 hours work a day :) )
Title: Re: Empire Total War
Post by: Warcold on February 25, 2009, 12:10:31 PM
ugh, a 2 GB download for 2 trials and 2 battles
had hoped for more...

is it just me or are the units much less predictable than in RTW?
could be that i lost touch with how xTW-units work, but I still have the feeling that RTW units just did what i wanted them to do (most of the time)
in ETW, they just... dont do what i want them to do...
Title: Re: Empire Total War
Post by: Bethor on February 27, 2009, 01:58:36 PM
I was surprised the demo was 2 gig too. I "think" it is becouse in fact you have the complete game minus a few to unluck the whole game (this is just a guess) so that when you actually buy it you have it rather quickly.

That is a guess, but it would seem it is rather small for that option.

Anyway i noticed too and also wondered why :D

as for the units, land battle went as i wanted it. am glad i can use wasd now.. cant do that with M2:TW. I even felt they responded better in E:TW than in M2:TW. Had a bit more problems with the sea battle. Than again i only did that once. :D and in the tutorial i had no probs. the battle was a whole diffrent story :D

Haven't got experiance in R:TW. so really have no say about that
Title: Re: Empire Total War
Post by: Warcold on February 27, 2009, 03:49:34 PM
what bothers me the most in TW games is that when you move multiple units they place emselves in the distribution they were before, not as a neat line

or there must be a shortcut to fix that i forgot about / never knew about

Hmm, as i am dutch i played the dutch (a bit, spend most time on the couch with my gf)

and when sieging a town with the dutch they said something that sounded to me as "beledigen" what means insulting. and it should have sounded as "belegeren" which is in fact sieging. :D

Als the dutch voice was kinda weird. as i under stand dutch it should have sounded familiar. like the dutch in the colonization 2.

But it looks aw droppingly good. and plays like a charm, although the load times are still pretty long imo.

played 2 turns just to see what it could do. Hope to start a real campaign soon :D

But first impression is, I'm impressed!

I wonderd, is it me, or is it, that after a time, a powder fog appears above the battlefield. I had the impression it did and it was more at the location where my cannons were shooting at the town.

Well, I am no longer in the near overwhelmed state I have been the past day or so.  I am loving every minute of this game though, be it defeats or victories, or growing my farms, towns and ports.  I was a little taken back by how much territory I start out with as Great Britain, but having got to grips with its quite a good footing to start on - again the brits feel like a "starter" Empire, but with a complexity over the horizon that is really looking good :)

I am loving land battles and the sea battles - just wish there was a way for me to have my nay bombard places on coastlines, would be a great aid when assaulting harbour cities and such like.

I can see this devouring my freetime for quite a while - especially with it having achievements now in Steam :D

Tried Steam Support?
Title: Re: Empire Total War
Post by: Jeremiah on March 06, 2009, 12:11:55 PM
not a thing from Steam support - fortunately I have several email addresses so I opened a new Steam account - in like flynn and I've signed up to HoJ group. Liking the battles so far must try the campaign  one thing I would like to change tho is the music: I would like the strains of Lillibullero or Yankee doodle coming from a fife and drum band as my grenadiers go over the top.  I always liked the way Europa Universalis had period music to get into the mood (for which I would also recommend the Baroque Cycle books by Neal Stephenson, Quicksilver etc.).  I would also have liked the game to start with the end of the Thirty Years War or the start of the English Civil War but meh  a great game - might try and set up a Culloden battle (slaughtering highlanders and other papist jacobites never gets old).

might try and set up a Culloden battle (slaughtering highlanders and other papist jacobites never gets old).

You revel in the worst case of genocide perpetrated by the English?

i always love the fact that those Highlanders that died that day were fighting to restore the RIGHTFUL king to the throne of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales (as the then king was German, Hanovarian family) and yet most English see it as a Scots v English fight, it was more a Sectarian difference rather than a Regional one, but i dont know what you have been taught about Culloden. The only certain thing was that evil was perpetrated on the days that followed, men, woman, and child were murdered, hung, burned alive and a raped. most of those "highlanders and papist Jacobites" were not fighting in the battle their only crime was being born Scottish.

Quote
"The trouble with Scotland is that it is full of Scots" Edward Longshanks

and it is also the reason why NO Scot proud of his heritage would sign the English national anthem ...

Quote
God grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy Mighty aid,
Victory bring,
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.

Marshal Wade was a General at the battle leading his Veterans against a rabble of highlanders who still relied on the fearsome highland charge to break the ranks of the enemy.

There should be no doubt that this battle should NEVER be celebrated it was a sad day that saw the death of the rightful rule by Monarchy in the whole Union and one that should be looked upon in contemplation at the evils that men can perpetrate.

Does anyone have some pointers for sea battles, as it seems i always get my ships sunk or fleeing with minimal dammage done to my enemies.

Looks like i am dooing something wrong. So any pointers would be appreciated.

also i love it when you click on land with a fleet and get the message: "We're a fleet sir, not an army" (anway they say that in dutch)

also, dont know if anyone noticed. But a few time is was sieging a fortress, and when the besieged assaulted me i could place my armies inside the fort i was sieging. and the enemies outside of it. And at that time the computer doesnt scale the walls or anything and you can slaughter the enemy completely.

Title: Re: Empire Total War
Post by: Caradir on March 06, 2009, 03:08:00 PM
in sea battles just zig zag towards enemy, depending on wind direction as indicated at top of screen. on my big ships i use the broadside option, with chain shot as the initial barrage on a good hit this will really slow down any faster vessels allowing you to turn and fire a broadside from the other sides guns.

also if im fighting superior numbers of smaller ships ill drive my large ones right between them allowing both sides to fire at seperate targets.

Also pick fights you can win ;) look at the number of bars next to the unit for its numbers :)

Post by: Jeremiah on March 06, 2009, 05:22:58 PM
hmm interesting points you make Cara.  Not sure if it was the worst case of genocide the English engaged in, the great Irish Famine of '48 might be a contender for that title but what the heck don't want to argue over a throwaway line about a (war)game but there are a few points to note, all of which are highly contentious of course :

(1) more Scots fought for Cumberland at Culloden than for Charles.  And when did killing people who charge at you across a field will huge great swords count as genocide?
(2) the highland clearances that followed later could be classed as a form of genocide (or ethnic cleansing by modern standards) and were largely engineered by clan chiefs wanting to make more money from sheep farming
(3) after the feudal clan system was consigned to history, Scotland never had it so good
(4) the Stuarts gave up their moral right to kingship a long time before James II abdicated and threw the great seal into the Thames making their claim to the throne null and void. The present model of constitutional monarchy ie. rule through and with the consent of, parliament was settled in 1688.  If anything Charlese was seeking to create a absolute monarchy along the lines of the French kings - he was born and raised a French aristocrat.  If he had won at Culloden, it is likely a third civil war would have followed and not some golden age freedom.
(5) "Butcher" Cumberland did give a "no quarter" order and so deserves the soubriquet (although at the time it was, I think, within the rules of continental warfare as understood at the time) - but the fact that the winner of any particular battle is an evil bastard doesn't make the loser a saint either.  It is the lust for power which brings about these evils (imho) and I think the leaders on both sides were guilty of that.

Either way - I'm sorry if I offended you personally Caradir  :)

So it lets you begin installing it - than spams that?

IS Steam connected to the net or in offline mode? As on a first install from dics I think it requires to be connected to verify the key. (Dont quote me, I settled for an electronic purchase in the end as I am lazy).

STEAM SUCKS!

It did 5 years ago - now its just its users suck at Steam ;) (Seriously, I aint a fanboi, but my only issues have been the same ones most had with Hl2 way back and nothing since).

Anyways, which edition did you get?

If one with extra units - special forces edition, the code for the actual game is on the back of the manual not on the flyer - thats the code for the special units.

=========

Also steam isnt being silly and trying to download the game while you install it all is it?

if so do this:

Quote
If ETW is appearing to download from Steam instead of installing from the retail disc, please try running Steam with the following:

Steam.exe -install d:

(eg in case the DVD is in the D drive)

So, my British Empire isnt even close to being reformed in my vision :)

Ive spent the past 10 years (20 turns which tend to last ages for me while I spend my time deciding my goals that turn!)) making myself richer and whoring as many trade spots as I can and building commercial ports everywhere bar Portsmouth.

Yet to have more than the starting cities and Fort Rupert spawn either.

Loving it though!

I cant choose as usual, so have conquered some german territories, do some trading, and try to kick off some pirates of my traderoutes...

... and fail utterly in the last thing. as bethor i have trouble with the seabattles. not being able to have the ships attack one certain ship AND steer them yourselves just gets to me.
plus still having trouble with moving grouped up units, made a screenshot yesterday with 4 units moving in one direction and 2 in the opposite when i tried to move them all to one spot.

for the rest: nice, nice   :D

when gooing into ship battles, save it up front (there is a save option in the right top corner of the popup that asks you to either fight yourself, let the computer fight or retreat) That way you can practice battles. and actually win those you should win.

personally i am getting the hang of those sea battles.. but they appeal less to me than the land battles (I especially like defensive land battles where you can make a nice defensive line with the sandbag thingies :D )

Too bad there isn't an option to put only the land battle difficulty up.

because eventhough i am getting the hang of seabattles i still suck at them. Although i occasionally win now :D

New patch (1.3) later today, as part of which 14 free units are given:

Quote
14 Free Units have been included in this patch, adding a large amount of diversity to the playable factions and the armies the player will face. These units replace ‘generic’ equivalents giving each faction a unique identity on the battlefield. Here is a description of each free unit available in the update:

Prussian Grenadiers

Wearing a distinctive brass fronted mitre cap, the Prussian Grenadiers are an explosive force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Spanish Guardias de infateria

These elite guard infantry are charged with protecting the monarch and are a potent force on the battlefield.

Swedish lifeguard horse

This cavalry regiment forms part of the monarchs’ household guard. Superbly drilled, they act as a shock force on the battlefield.

Holland Horse Guard

Armed with heavy cavalry sabres, these disciplined cavalrymen represent the elite of the army.

Prussian Garde Du Corp

The Prussian Garde Du Corp are a replacement for the Prussian standard Household cavalry. These heavy horse shock troops are best used to break enemy lines and overrun enemy positions. With a strong charge and fearsome attack, these riders make short work of those who would oppose a Prussian monarch.

Prussian Life guard

The Prussian life guards are equipped similarly to line infantrymen. However their uniforms are altogether more splendid, marking them out as a superior force, in arrogance if nothing else. They do a good job as garrison troops and are dedicated to the crown.

Russian Grenadiers

This new Russian unit is great for assaults and their grenades pack a mighty punch!

Spanish  Guardias De Corp

The Spanish Guardias De Corp replace household cavalry for Spain. With almost unbreakable morale, on the charge they are almost unstoppable.

Spanish Grenadiers

These are a replacement for the standard Spanish Grenadiers with a distinctive bearskin hat to mark them out as exemplary on the battlefield.

Swedish ‘Lifeguards of foot’

These are a highly trained replacement for the standard Swedish guard. They are often used as a force in a system that defends a monarchy and can be relied upon for utter loyalty and deadly accuracy in the field. Their professionalism is reflected in their fearsome battle reputation.

Holland Guard

The Holland Guards from the United Provinces are superior line infantry units. Carrying smoothbore muskets, they were traditionally chosen to protect the royal family and have an incredibly high morale, often making them the last troops to break in a fight.

Scots

The Scots are a Highland ex-patriate infantry used by the United Provinces, renowned for their deadly charge.

Swiss Infantry

Very disciplined infantry of the United Provinces with quick reload and excellent marksmanship.

Mamelukes

Mamelukes are fearless light horsemen, deadly when deployed against a broken or unsupported enemy.

Additionally the Spanish nation has had a new uniform design to better reflect its historical look.

well, pvp would mean nearly all fights will be played in real time (what other fun is there in pvp?), which makes the game slowwww
but if you guys would rather pvp, that's cool too... time is the only issue i got with pvp really

Seems right now, when i try hosting a game other people cannot join.  My router and hard firewall are set up all correct too.

nope its only 1vs1.

Which sucks.

turn based is also a little too much for me.

and the chat window that wont stay open sucks :S

Still - proving to myself I need much more practice at this game as I really havent played it much...

tested if i could join a quick battle and i could, so it's not that i cant connect to others, but somehow couldnt connect to you...
also, this scrambled text reappeared after i finished the quick battle, which is unsettling, never had problems with that before and when googling for 'Empire total war scrambled text' a whole new world opened up for me. a scary one! I stopped looking and hope it wont interfere too much...

is this since you changed region in the steam settings?

As it could a clash of language?

game menu was in english before too afaik (as translated stuff sucks most of the time, dont know how the germans and french cope with that, guess they're brainwashed enough)
anyway, thought of that too and changed it back, but havent tried it yet, if i remember correctly, will look into it later

how is the game in MP? how does the turnbased suck? who's winning?

Its good, slower than SP due to having to wait on each players turn, so 10 mins each max 20 mins per turn, usually around 10-15 average i think we had, so 4.5 hours we managed about 5 years in game :)  so a 2 player game could last 40 ish hours, they need to be able to allow human players to have their turns at the same time.

as to whos winning, we have avoided fighting each other yet, although my rakes love being on English soil ;) and my prestige is roughly 3x Jons :D

My main fight is against the Barbary states who i wiped out then they regained 2 of their regions in uprisings :S and the Inuits who i wiped out :D

ah... that's how Jon meant turnbased... think it's due to game mechanics, hard to circumvent that unless whole game gets refurbished.

aye, think i'd prefer max 5 mins myself, it may cause some missed chances, but speeds up the players and thus the game

I went with 10 as it seemed like a good idea on short notice (didnt realise how the mp actually worked).  5 would be good in early stages, but if a game got long enough in it may become too short...

Anyways biggest single issue is MORE PLAYERS per campaign.  1v1 is good, but a 3 or 4 person game would rock so much.

So - necro - as Saf can play MP now his ports are open.

1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1 or teams - if we get more people etc?

Try to find a regular day of the week to play this on?

I'd be interested :)

But let's check if my forwarding ports (added ETW ports now) solves my problem first.

yeah it's odd, no clue what went wrong.
it included a problem I've had before: seeing 2 networks in my 'network & sharing center', but sometimes no connection at all - DNS giving probs etc.

i'll give it another chuck, but not too happy with what happened.
if a hard reset fixes all problems I get it's not so bad though - pretty easy to plug a pencil in that hole ( ::))
as long as it stays at that...

Heard about this - iirc the same guy did some great mods for MTWII that really helped it.  Will deffo give it a download also as I dont like the idea that ETW is just sitting on my HDD not getting any love ;)
