I guess that confirms it for me then. I think I'll let my dad run out his Vista experience until next year on his laptop as well. We were considering bumping him up to Windows 7 and then 10. He can always get a cheap new laptop with Windows 10 next year since he only uses a browser and the occasional Word document anyway.

There's a tool by a well known security expert that makes it easy to change/remove a registry key that will prevent Windows 10 from downloading/installing:

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

Download button half way down the page on the right. Security expert. Definitely not a usability expert.
Also: sound warning when using the tool. Turn down your volume.

Turns out the girlfriend has been paying more attention than me. I already had 6,3GB worth of Windows 10 files on my laptop ready to be installed! Her laptop was clean. Damn it.  :'(

Removed that shit and disabled it with Never10 with two clicks.

So assuming Microsoft actually pulls the plug on the free upgrade on 29th July 2016...

What say ye? Upgrade from Windows 7/8: yay or nay?

Personally I'm still trying to make up my mind. Privacy settings in Windows 10 can be toned down manually. And surely Microsoft has been collecting plenty of our data for the past 20 years. That's not my biggest concern. I'm not too fond of the constant updating and rebooting it seems to force on you. Or can that be completely disabled as well?

My laptop is from 2011. Definitely planning to get new hardware before Windows 7 becomes obsolete in 2019. So I'm tempted to just stick it out. No telling which of my current programs will stop working or what might go wrong with an upgrade. Or if you need to do a full reinstall. Had a few months a while ago where my graphics drivers and Windows versions were causing a lot of BSODs, but they fixed that. Other than that I've been happy with Windows 7.

But you're one serious cease and desist letter away from the private server being shut down like https://en.nostalrius.org/. And losing everything "instantly". Admittedly there's always the risk of a dev pulling the plug on a game and official servers, but most of the time you can see that coming by constant server merges and overall dropping player base.

Thanks! I have those but didn't try them yet. Reinstall time.

So... I was wondering if anyone can recommend more games like Wasteland 2. Where you level up and customize a team of characters and not just one character. Preferably with a similar graphics level or better, so no oldy timey 8bit stuff like the original XCOM games. And turn based combat.

There's the newer XCOM, which always felt a bit more base managing-y interrupted by constant alien attacks to me. I guess there was some storyline, but not like there is in Wasteland 2 or older games like Neverwinter Nights for example. It felt like upgrading your base and gear and managing the satellite network so you could murder the boss alien was the main goal instead of advancing a wider storyline.

Is XCOM 2 different from 1 in that specific sense? Or is it now managing your stolen ship and leveling up to defeat the main alien boss?

Other titles?

Sorry to hear that dude. Stuff like this makes it sound like the game is heavily circling the drain?

Thanks for explaining it in two sentences!

It seems I never recovered from losing my previous dwarf rockstar and his beer goat. I currently only have a goatless level 15 minstrel.

So since I murdered my killer guitarist last time they changed things by not taking action... does an individual player need to do anything special to keep what they have? Or will the guildleader move all the players along with the guild?

Reading through all the official messages and reinstalling now. Been busy with swtor 12x xp.

Yeah TB said they did well on this one.

I recall having super pink spaceships many years ago so I could actually see them on my screen.
