For years I've seen this [what I assumed was an] acronym and wondered what it meant. It didn't seem like anything was an obvious fit for it, I wondered if it might stand for "I don't... something" because there's I tend to use idk a lot ("I don't know").

So on sunday after seeing in 3 times in as many minutes I snapped and made my lady wife google it, and we drew a blank. All options seem as ludicrous as each other.

I Don't Disagree
Indeed
Investment Dealer's Digest!?

Please tell me it's not shorthand for indeed.

In dutch it's shorthand for inderdaad, which translates, indeed, into indeed. ;)

I only found that one out myself a few months ago. I've seen it rarely and my brain has always come back with something like "I Didn't ... er, Do it?"

I just found out that "ACRONYM" is a ACRONYM

Meaning ...

"Abbreviated Coded Rendition Of Name Yielding Meaning"

Now that could be made up,  but it sounds cool..

It also raises the question..

What is the real word for an ACRONYM, when ACRONYM is a ACRONYM :)

RARH!! *brain slowly melts*

PS.  I've always read it as Indeed too :)

Envicta.

originally known as Initialism, however the word acronym was coined by Bell laboratories during WWII and has become the popular phrase for this type of shortening.

Initialism uses only first letters of words in the phrase.  i.e NATO, Laser etc

Acronym can use a combination of initials and contained letters to make a word.  Radar,Gestapo etc
"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)

In these kind of situations, the urban dictionary always comes in handy: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=idd
'Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future.'

'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.'
