What do you look for in an MMO?

The only other MMO that has come close to what I want from an MMO is Conan

Thuggy wrote that in the CO First Impressions thread.

Its got me thinking what it is that attracts us to the MMO's we choose to play, or just try out in some cases?

all i look for is fun, mix that with people you like, a giggle, a few beers, and a challenge then you have the perfect formula.

"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)

What attracts me most in MMOs is small group play, be it PvE or PvP. The 5-man heroics in WoW during the TBC era felt like they were made for me (esp pre-nerf). Wiping for 2-5 hours on trash in Shattered Halls with a dedicated guild group (read: good friends) must be one of the most awesomest experiences one can have behind a computer screen. WAR battles were a bit too massive for me, as was AV. Tactical PvP scenarios a la Arathi basin (wow) or some of the WAR scenarios (Nordenwatch, Isha's temple) also make for a lot of fun for me. Arena PVP is often too static, not chaotic enough, and with too few people for my taste. ;) Levelling professions (collecting recipes, I can obsess about collecting stuffs ingame) and having a cool, working, economy adds to the entertainment for me, but it's not the most important thing (if it was I'd still be playing Eve) ;)

Turnoffs are class dynamics that aren't quite right (tanks keeping aggro too easily, healers being able to heal too much or not enough, dps that doesn't need to balance their damage output with either threat or self-inflicted damage), a generally impolite community, hmm. I know I can think of more.... :P

Edit: And what Mac stated so eloquently and so much more concisely than me, below!  ::)

I want a MMO that is like wow without all the dumb it down for the masses things.

I guess what i really want is:
-It need things to spend your hours on both as a group or solo
-A melee class for frontline fighting that isnt a rogue but at the same time not pidgeonholed into a tank or a free kill in pvp. Something that can be tank or dps would be great. I like hitting stuff with sharp weapons and i like tanking..
-Movement in the world must be as free a possible and not feel like your char is running trough mud like it did in lotro near launch.
-A good balance of pvp and pve.
-Not have everything dumbed down for the masses.

WAR being my first MMO I seriously played, I don't have much experience to boast on. But I do have quite some experience in online gaming and the LAN I had going with (a) flatmate(s).

Drawing from that I mostly agree with much that the ppl above already have said:
- Small close-knit group that doesnt surprise you (or only in good ways :)) - you can read and write with em, if that's an English expression too
- Teamspeak (or the motorbike-coms we used in my dorm :D)
- A challenge that makes the group perform at the edge
- The fun will magically appear when the 3 points above are fulfilled I guess.

I also do like trading skills, packratting ftw. But I have to agree with Gunnarr that the EvE system is just a bit too similar to RL.
Tradingskills are a nice way to spend your solotime. Both PVE and PVP are most fun in a group IMO.
'Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future.'

'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.'

Atmosphere - I want it to be a bit like a bar or club that has the right sort of feel to it, gameplay is less important to me than the whole feel.  I don't want to socialise with the entire player base just like I don't want to talk to everyone in a club or bar or even walking down the high street. So for me a good MMO is like a good hotel lobby or pavement cafe, a bad one is like Saturday shopping (which is a hardcore PvP instance).

I guess its summed up in the classic phrase : the best thing about MMOs is the people, the worst thing about MMOs is the people.

What Mac and Jere said :)

I prefer to play MMO's where people, who I am playing with, don't mind when I disappear every now and then. There are so many shiny things in the world to grab my attention, plus I actually have a family and work who also need attention at times :)

Well, a thread I didnt give my own answer in :)

And to be honest, its been hard for me to pin down what I look for, given I dont really have a "why do I play MMO's" thing either.  All I know is one day I read a thing about Planetside and tried it and stayed, then moved on to EVE, SWG & CoH for a while, then one fateful Saturday in spring 2005 I bought WoW, without knowing anything about it. And the rest of that is history that many here had a part in.  I think by the time my tenure in that game had come to an end, I still didnt have a reason for buying it other than "oohh shiny box", but I did end staying for so long due to the people I "met" and played with on a daily basis.

As Taith said in the Guilty Secret thread:

Quote
I've discovered I can even spend an hour and a half trying to get through a three-phase boss fight no one in the raid has done before if the attitude of the people involved leans towards just having fun doing it.

Pretty much - as ever for Taith - hitting a few years of gaming on the head for me.  People I find myself drawn to in any capacity (I never set out to "lead" a group it just happened and I think i became better for it) and a shared attitude, goal etc are what could be said "do it" for me in MMO's.

The WAR folks here - I think we had that for sure in the few months we all gave that game on release, until the issues in the game started to materialise, and I got into EVE hardcore again :)
