Title: A new attempt at getting some levels in this game
Post by: Dlarah on November 01, 2009, 12:21:24 AM
Grinding xp from mobs instead of quests gets boring fast in Aion, WoW cant hold me for long and running missions or mining just doesnt do it for me in EVE right now. Time to try and do a few more levels in Lotro again. :)
Problem i have had with this game is not being able to pick a main class to level so here are a few questions i got:

Guardian:
Are they very slow at higher levels for questing or farming?
If you got a group for a instance and got one guard, is there any point in taking another?
Is there a demand for guardians so that you got a chance of gearing up without having to rely on someone being nice enough to take you with them for gearing up?

Hunters:
Is it possible for one to get groups or are there way too many of them competing for spots?

Captains:
Where do they stand in the group setup?
Can they tank?

guardians are slo assed at 40+ to level solo. painfully so. Not really a call for 2 guardians in a group 1 fills a niche, 2nd adds nothing as all classes out dps them they have no CC or healing ability.

Hunters are the quickest to level, there are lots of them, but no harder to get a group for 1 than any class except Tank/ Healing classes. many instances can benefit from multiple hunters they have decent CC (roots and fear) and their ranged DPS is good.

Captains, are the buffbots, the have decent dps, and can tank reasonably well. (i tank endgame with my capt at times) they hit slow and hard, huge crits (but not often, sure my melee crit is 6%) a captain in a team can turn a wipe into a survivable situation. They use heralds/banners that are beneficial, have various marks to put on target (%age of damage returned as heals, + damage, +threat). Captains main weakness is they cant heal themselves only others (unless traited)

LM's are quick to level their dps is nice, survivability for a squishy class is fantastic due to the fact they are masters of CC. The are the power batteries of the team, filling up fellows and draining the bad guys. And they get pets that tank/ do sneaky dps/ dps on multiple targets etc.

Burglars can Solo Elites and some that ive seen manage Elite Masters. Their Dps in Melee is 2nd only to Champs. when the turd hits though they go down fast. but then most burglars know where their HIPS are  (Hide In Plain Sight)

Champs are dps monsters, downside being that in Fervour stance they cant dodge/evade/block and take -30% heals (excepting their class heals) levelling is fast, "good" champs always in demand due to the fact they can interrupt mobs without breaking a sweat, and can tank groups better than most guardians ive seen (but not as well as a good guardian) Traited can us eHeavy Shields and fill main tank role at expense of damage output.

RK's, the lorebreakers (according to forums) out dps Hunters, ive soloed Elites on my low leveller, Can heal reasonably well (they use mostly HOTS rather than a Minstrels reactive heals) some people just plain wont group with them due to them being arses. Has a pet rock.

Wardens, the squishiest tank class, Medium armour tankers. Dps is about par with captains, but their survivability depends on the user. Again a good warden is a site to behold can heal the party whilst maintaining agro on a group but a bad warden is a liability. The gambit system is fun but only if your memory is good so you can go red, green, green, yellow etc and remember which combos do what.

Minstrels are slow to level post 40 as well though not as slow as guardians. Main healers. A few nice utility abilities which are very situational.

Good post there matey - gives me some food for thought too (Mulling over alt deletion and some rerolls, try and play the game without raging about silly stuff like easy mode etc etc etc etc).

I'll keep Beosvir ofc, but tbh I aint a fan of the content he is in, Moria doesnt feel right at all when I get beyond the dwarven made areas and related quests, so I will hiatus him, and try and start a new char of some sort before my trip starts.

And here i tought i had it narrowed down to 3 classes... Now champ starts to look interesting again. :D

Is there any point in using armorcrafting to keep your armor up to date or will questrewards be as good as or better than most of the stuff you can make?

whilst it is always useful to make your own stuff armoursmith is metal heavy and does require a little metal "grinding" to level, i found that if i wasnt being fed unneeded metal from my alts id have out levelled the stuff i could easily make. You can get through quite well on quest rewards. Jeweller is probably best craft to level as rewards jewellery isnt that great, it needs less metals, and at endgame is always a money spinner.

Another good thing to do is go explorer, mine and chop all that you find and sell on AH that way you can easily make enough cash to buy anything you want or save for horsey at 35. plus you still have Tailor to make cloaks that way.

or bug me in game and see what i can make as i have Supreme Masters in all skills ;) id probably need the lower tier metals/wood etc but would gladly do it.

What is this about more character slots?

What is this about more character slots?

the Siege Of Mirkwood expansions come with optional ADventurers Pack which gives 2 more character slots, shared character storage, and and in game crap.

SOM = £14.99

SOM + AP = £19.99

What is this about more character slots?

There is two versions of the Siege of Mirkwood, normal and specialish - specialish comes with a mount and two extra character slots :)

Its also the one I bought :D

Edit: Fuck beaten.

I got my SoM via the cogaccounts page or on here (http://www.lotro-europe.com/siege-of-mirkwood/preorder.php), if you already preordered SM and not the +AP one, then theres an option on there for just the AP - under Additional Extra's.

SOM will be available to download end NOV with final patching around 1st Dec (ish) (1st is US release date but turbine arent known to wait on EU localisation before releasing) but your launcher will autopatch when it becomes available.

Garrys with TLA still I think, and well you know where I am (when i play - I have "rage" issues and tend to log on for a day, play, then log annoyed :( )

Kurtt may be in TLA, but as I recall they have a pretty strict 'boot em if they're offline' policy (could be wrong) so probably unkinned atm.

Finally finished updating the game this morning.

I have to say, it seems a lot more polished than I remember. May be because my PC is slightly better spec, and its also running in DirectX 10. Everything looks so shiny. I like what they've done with the quest system, as I did have some difficulty tracking down the odd quest objective.

Also seems a bit more responsive also, though again, that may just be my PC. I'm going to be devoting a bit of time to Kurtt to get him into Moria and continue the epic story, and try and get a bit further with Norro, my Hunter, also.

I'll activate LOTRO too in a couple weeks again. My time in WoW is running out, and I won't continue paying for that.

Ive said it many times before but every major patch just adds that extra level of polish to LOTRO, SOM is improving combat responsiveness as well, by stopping auto attack animations from slowing down skill activations, and making mounts a passive ability rather than a carry in the bag item, so for people like me with multiple mounts thats ace :)

/me bites tongue.

Thats one of the things that I aint a fan of - which is why I turn it off :)

Edit after garry: SoM could be the expansion/large patch that gets me into the game again and stps my rage on the combat issues!  As for graphics/polish - it does seem to get better with each iteration - although as you suggest Dan, that could be the fact that both of us have updated our tech over time...

I know your not a fan of the quest system matey ;)

For me though, I just find it increases my overall enjoyment to stick my brain in neutral and follow the arrows :D
