Warhammer Online / [Ironbreaker] Building threat
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:50:58 AM »
I was having some trouble getting the mobs to pay me sufficient attention yesterday in the Sewers.
In my own defense, they were all 2+ levels higher and me and Vacuum, and we both were taking big amounts of damage that had to be healed.....but still!

So, a question to all you other Ironbreakers: which abilities do you feel build good (the best?) threat - for the amount of AP they cost. I'm not too concerned with Grudge as it looks like it's almost always near 100 anyway, except when I use it to regain AP. ;)

My thoughts so far:
  • Make sure your oathfiend is set to another (off)tank. Even though it's usually not a problem, more grudge never hurts.
  • Grudging blow has a large amount of built-in hate, as per the tooltip.
  • Heavy blow: a big chunk of damage for a modest amount of AP. Don't spam this one, since you'll overwrite the second "tick" which hits for more than the first.
  • Binding grudge again causes a large amount of damage at 100 grudge. For the moment I'm going by the theory that damage = threat, except for innate "bonus" hate, like grudging blow.

Other stuff:
  • Taunt only in emergency situations - to get the mob back. 20 seconds can be a long cooldown, when tanking 2 mobs. My WoW instict makes me move the mob away from the squishies after, hoping that mobs are less likely to aggro a person when he's not in melee range, but so far I have no evidence that this is actually the case.
  • The knockdown abilities, like "Away with ye!" and "Shield of reprisal" are great emergency abilities when you lost a mob and need a few more seconds for your taunt to come off cooldown. They also seem to build a decent amount of hate. (I guess getting knocked on your tail does that to a mob)

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Kill a special bat just east of the T2 dwarf warcamp to get "The Echo Hunter"
(Quest says you need to turn something in somewhere but I got it as soon as its corpse hit the floor)

After book 5 it gets a lot less fun, indeed!
I hang in there until book 9 myself, and haven't read the last couple. It's a pity, he was off to a good start.

I noticed the introduction thread by Warcold and thought that was a great idea, so I'll shamelessly copy it. ;)

Gaming Style:
There's other stuff than gaming, but if I play, I try to play the best I can. And I'm still looking for a "real" job and am only working parttime now, so I have a decent amount to spare on games.....
I love to explore new stuff - find out about anything that a (new) game has to offer, play together with cool people, and kick some hordie destro butt now and then. ;)

Characters & Classes:
After playing dps classes in WoW for a long time, I finally tried something else and found I was much better at healing - and liked it better, too, surprisingly!
I've tried my hand at tanking some, after and found that that, too, suited me better than dealing damage. So I decided to go with what I know in WAR, and rolled an ironbreaker and rune priest side by side. I hope I'll find enough time to level them together!

About you:
I've loved games and gaming all my life. The only thing that comes near is my love for a good story. When I first heard about MMOs I was pretty sure I would be hooked, so I stayed away from them. ;) But, with my studies finally drawing to an end, I decided to buy and install World of Warcraft to celebrate. That was about 3 years ago, and that decision made the last 2 courses that I still had to do take about 1 year longer than they should have...... :-X

Anyway, it finally happened, and I've graduated about a year ago and am still looking for the perfect job in marketing or PR. Please feel free to point me towards one. ;)
In the meantime I'm still working in a store selling mobile phones. It makes decent money and it's not too annoying, though it's a bit unchallenging.

In WoW, I was lucky enough to meet a lot of nice people, that were at that point inexperienced enough to believe in a clueless noob's dreams of a guild that would not suck, where all players would treat each other with respect, that would even treat players outside the guild kindly, and that would be respected throughout the realm. Note that I didn't include conquering all endgame, since, well, I didn't have a clue what endgame was. ;) Surprisingly enough, it turned into a semblance of success, and some of the people that met each other back then still play together, with most of the ideals intact. One thing I did learn about myself in the process is that I don't have the patience to be GM, and I've long since handed that job over.

Off the computer, I've also played a lot of games, including tabletop Warhammer (pretty casually, since I didn't have enough money to blow on an entire army - I used to play skaven in fantasy and Eldar Harlequins in 40k, the last mostly because of the challenge involved in painting them) Most of the miniatures I do have are still at the same guy that Warcold's miniatures are at. Including a be-autiful Doomwheel centerpiece.  :-[

Books:
As I said I love a good story, and fantasy stories are my favorite. The Forgotten Realms books by R.A. Salvatore are all-time greats as far as I'm concerned (Dark Elf trilogy etc.) then the wheel of time series (though that sadly peters out in the later novels), the Amber series by Zelazny. Also I'd warmly recommend "the Grail quest" series by Bernard Cornwell - a sort of 'historical fantasy'.

Music:
I'm as undecided as Warcold there, though I mainly listen to blues/jazz and rock (from 50/60s rock to grunge, from punk to alternative/indie. I'm just confused. ;)
