Title: Steam Deals :)
Post by: Mangala on July 03, 2009, 08:32:19 AM
We need a thread for these.

Right now they have this: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1764/  going over £150 of games for £35 inc Civ 4, Sid Meiers Pirates, Bioshock and lots of other massive titles.

Or there is Fallout 3 for half price: http://store.steampowered.com/app/22300/

Any ideas how to let me run EUIII windowed in steam?

The shoddy paradox forums wont let me search, despite being registered and logged in :(

nvm, remembered how:  -window in launch options in steam itself.

Edit again: FFS that doesnt work :(

EVE Online is on steam for 2.99 - thats including a free month. So if you want to try it out ;)

This can be 51 days play total, if you do the 21 days Steam trial, then upgrade using the offer on Steam of £2.99.  (With EVE, if you extend a trial to a full game you dont lose any of the free game time you may have left).

So I blew 3£ to test this - and it works.  51days for £3 if you get the deal before August 17th. After purchasing on Steam, right lick the eve symbola nd select manage game account and it will take you from there to a eve online site. Login with your trial details and it converts your account and adds your 30 days.

EVE is now back up to £8.99 for 51 days on Steam if done right (21 day trial (ask me for a buddy key!) and then the game purchase itself on Steam = 51 days for you and maybe 30 days for me!) http://store.steampowered.com/app/8500/

Age of Conan is currently £17.99 :) http://store.steampowered.com/app/6340/

About this Steam thingy... I have tried to avoid it, because I don't undestand it  ???

So, basically, do you get to buy the games just like from www.gog.com or www.gamersgate.com, or are the games stored on some steam server or? Also, what are these Steam groups?

During last weekend my nephew called me a relic from some old times because I don't have Steam, but I just haven't found the reason to get there (and besides, on every gaming forum I visit people are moaning how their Steam versions of the games do not work as intended. So, umm, any "Steam for dummies" guide available from somewhere?

Steam installs the games locally via its own client - which is at once a chat program, store, games list, mp connection tool etc etc.  It had issues when it was first released (I hated it then) but over the past 4 years the many issues have been ironed out, theres a few that crop up, but valve or the relevant dev gets on top right away and sorts them out. (Im a converted fanboi!)  The games are also stored on a central server, so if you install steam elsewhere it will install your games for you too. No need to copy info over from an old machine and so on.

I havent had issues with games not working properly - excepting the odd were windowed mode takes work arounds and so on.

As for groups - social things that let people game together without needing to do lots of random shit (like in Hamachi etc) - basically you own a game and a member of your group does, they can jump into your server (if its a game like Tf2, or L4D etc) without needing said servers details.

Steam really is a good tool - I use gog too, but steam has grown on me so much I love it.

Stalker is a sweet game - survival rpg set in the Chernoybl area, really good plot and the area is as close to reality (although shrunk down) as the russian devs could get it - games a few years old now, but is worth being in any rpg fans collection.

Not exactly a Steam deal, but the guys at Gameplay have a little competition: tell them what your 10 favorite games of 2009 were, and they may send you a custom Xbox.
I think there's only one though. Still, you don't have to buy anything, and at the cost of sending one email with 10 titles in it, it may be worth a shot.
Oh, and the bloody competition is only open for you bloody brits. :P

Free game.  Its an old UT2004 mod called Alien Swarm.

Valve have taken it (by hiring the team behind it) and redone it in the Source engine, looks great and even better its FREE. (Unlocks in 2 days or so).

We should ALL get it, as the original mod was great and valve do work wonders too!

Been too lazy to search for an actual L4D2 thread, I bought this the other day for the bargain price of £5.99...... anyone playing this online?

"Usually" on thursdays as part of our steam evening - but having lives/other games sometimes gets in the way :)

Turkeyweek sales on steam. Different things over the next 5 days.

24th Nov has:

Borderlands @£9.99
and Deus Ex collection @ £2.99

Also:

Prototype @ £7.49
Sam & Max: The Devils Playhouse @ £7.50
Shank @ £6.69
R.U.S.E. @ £20.09 (bit shit tbh, CoH and other RTS' are much better)
Alpha Protocol @ £5
Counter Strike Source @ £3.50
Indie Energy pack @ £3.99

savings are between 33% for RUSE and 89% for 'Indie Energy Pack'

There is some werid 'gift special' on too, giving you pretty large discounts on gifting 6-10 games to friends;

8x Deus Ex:GOTY for £8 (-83% for each game)
10x Half Life 2 for £13.99 (-77% for each game)
6x Borderlands for $39.99 (-66% for each game)

All valid until late tomorrow.

World of Goo (http://store.steampowered.com/app/22000/) now in the 'Indie Clever Pack' (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/6787/) - together with 4 other games for €4,49.
I don't know the other games, but World of Goo is brilliant and worth the 4,49 on it's own.

Title: Re: Steam Deals :)
Post by: Warcold on December 21, 2010, 10:52:56 AM
Well yeah, I lack the isk for the complete Paradox games, so looking to buy one or two of their games. First choice would be one of the games in the Hearts of Iron series, but I'm doubting between HoI-II (6,99 for complete pack) and HoI-III (9,99 for just the vanilla). What would you guys advise? I know from experience that sequels arent always better than their predecessors, so maybe II is the best (and cheaper) way to go?

2 is in a more complete state from what i understand, but I personally enjoy III when I fire it up occasionally. And theres been some patches for it that have made it much better than release.

Also - in before Dehn saying buy them both!

First one is Op Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for £3.75.

Not a fan of this one so wont buy it myself, but somewhere someone likes the Operation Flashpoint follow ups (First was ace, the same time did the ARMA series while Codies iirc ran with the Op Flashpoint instead due to owning the rights).

but if its mp you're looking for beware mp is broke has been since release they dont seem to care about sorting it theyd rather churn out shitty facebook games or crappy dlc before actually supporting this game.

made me sad that a game of this pedigree has been traeated badly but thems the eggs.

Jon, if you had planned to MP CK2 with me and Beth at some point, make sure to buy Swords of Islam DLC (and African Unit Pack/Songs of the Caliph song pack if you want maximum enjoyment), as I'm pretty sure we will play Islam rulers at some point. JIIIIHAAAAAAAD!!!!  ;D

We're playing Spanish rulers atm and boy! we're up against some pretty stiff Moorish oposition!
