The Dog & Duck / How's everyone doing?
« on: April 19, 2020, 06:20:46 PM »
Things are pretty bonkers in the world at the moment.

I quit WoW Classic a while back because I couldn't find a balance between the game and work/household. Playing Minecraft on and off to stay sane. Gaming is the only thing that really turns off my brain regarding real life for a bit, like a wonky form of meditation.

Other than that things are fairly stable financially for a change after years of struggling. Gf got a new job in January after being unemployed for a while and can luckily work from home. She watches a lot of anime the rest of the time to unwind. I've been living that quarantine/social distancing life for years now, so doing well there. Websites are still chugging along making some money.

Managing the mental side of things without antidepressants isn't always successful, but it's been better now that the initial anxiety about this worldwide mess has settled down. The time I manage to effectively work I'm restoring an old dog website to its former traffic and financial glory (and later a cat one as well).

Since we're both massively overweight I am trying to grab an online grocery delivery slot so I can cut that bullshit out of my life as well. Even though a local supermarket is so quiet after 9pm it quite literally nearly made me cry out of happiness, if I don't have to go I'd rather not. Spend that time taking a walk in the forest and heathland next door instead.

So many dishes to do now though. So many dishes.  :'(

Hope you guys are well and not hit too hard by what's going on. And if you are, that it will improve quickly.

The Dog & Duck / Windows 10 upgrade deadline looming
« on: July 01, 2016, 04:28:28 PM »
So assuming Microsoft actually pulls the plug on the free upgrade on 29th July 2016...

What say ye? Upgrade from Windows 7/8: yay or nay?

Personally I'm still trying to make up my mind. Privacy settings in Windows 10 can be toned down manually. And surely Microsoft has been collecting plenty of our data for the past 20 years. That's not my biggest concern. I'm not too fond of the constant updating and rebooting it seems to force on you. Or can that be completely disabled as well?

My laptop is from 2011. Definitely planning to get new hardware before Windows 7 becomes obsolete in 2019. So I'm tempted to just stick it out. No telling which of my current programs will stop working or what might go wrong with an upgrade. Or if you need to do a full reinstall. Had a few months a while ago where my graphics drivers and Windows versions were causing a lot of BSODs, but they fixed that. Other than that I've been happy with Windows 7.

The Dog & Duck / Story driven turn based team rpgs
« on: April 13, 2016, 07:10:11 PM »
So... I was wondering if anyone can recommend more games like Wasteland 2. Where you level up and customize a team of characters and not just one character. Preferably with a similar graphics level or better, so no oldy timey 8bit stuff like the original XCOM games. And turn based combat.

There's the newer XCOM, which always felt a bit more base managing-y interrupted by constant alien attacks to me. I guess there was some storyline, but not like there is in Wasteland 2 or older games like Neverwinter Nights for example. It felt like upgrading your base and gear and managing the satellite network so you could murder the boss alien was the main goal instead of advancing a wider storyline.

Is XCOM 2 different from 1 in that specific sense? Or is it now managing your stolen ship and leveling up to defeat the main alien boss?

Other titles?

General Gaming / Vylo.org: free browser based voice chat
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:28:16 PM »
So I follow a podcast that features two people from Vylo.org.
They created a simple way to get together with people on voice using your browser.

Create a room. Share the url. And talk. That's it. No server IP, username, password, etc. Ten seconds and you're good to go.

It's great for a quick way to get together with strangers temporarily without handing out your Skype or messing around with a voice chat client for half an hour. Whether for games or for work.

Thanks to Bethor and Caradir for helping me test it and the audio quality, which was surprisingly good.

Give it a go. It's early days for them and they're still improving the product What would you improve?

- They need to add https:// to the "Share this url" url so it gets turned into a clickable link in the chat you're sharing it in.
- I'm missing an audio meter or test feature. I want to know if the app is picking up my mic. Or other people's mics for that matter.
- I'd like confirmation of which microphone it's using, as I have a shitty built in mic and a separate usb mic.
- They need to add push to talk. Apparently that would require an addon... so treat it like a conference call.
- Add a visual cue to see which user is speaking.

It is pretty awesome that you can turn other users down on YOUR end. So if someone elses mic is really loud, you can fix that yourself.
Also, it seems to be a very stable web app. No problems chatting half an hour with three people. Can't say that about Skype on my laptop.

General Gaming / FREE GAME KEYS
« on: December 07, 2013, 02:29:03 PM »
I have a spare STEAM key for:

Natural Selection 2 - http://www.naturalselection2.com/
Am online multiplayer game that can give you the best time of your life and the worst. Marines vs aliens. Each team has a commander that plays from a top down strategy view and places structures and resources. Which can make the game very fun if people work together or very horrible if you have a poop team.

Omerta - City of Gangsters - http://www.cityofgangsters.com/us/
If you like Tropico, you'll like this. If you don't like tropico, don't bother with this. From the reviews and demo it seems not to be very challenging, but I enjoy building assets and playing the campaign.

The Dog & Duck / What to do with old games and music?
« on: August 25, 2013, 11:54:30 AM »
So we're clearing out the place and I've got a box or two/three with older games and official music cds.

If need be I'll dump it in the trash container outside, but are there more useful purposes? I don't want to go through individual sales/give aways. I just want to dump it. Either in the trash or with some other party. I know there's music magpie in the UK, but we don't have that over here I think.

Anything like Goodwill or Salvation Army or other places that can put it to good use? Or kid's charities or something?

There are disc recycling places, but a train ticket to drop stuff off over there will cost me more than anything I might get in return.

General Gaming / Origin: how evil is it really?
« on: August 15, 2013, 06:46:34 AM »
Regarding the current humble bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/?originbundle

Does anyone actually have Origin installed? Any big negatives?
EA, evil, silly bans for criticizing the company in forums, etc. But how bad is it really if that?

On EA's behalf, giving all the money to charity is of course nice, but it's pretty much an attempt to boost their PR and expand their Origin userbase amirite?

The Dog & Duck / What do you call these books?
« on: July 29, 2013, 05:15:04 PM »
I'm looking for books that contain images of often technical things. Vehicles, factories, bikes, engines, etc.
The image of the thing in question is often an illustration and is blown out or cut in half so all parts are visible on way or another.
Then the image has the names of all the parts around it with lines leading from the names to the actual parts in the illustration.

What are these damn things called.

General Gaming / HoJ Gaming Schedule
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:07:52 AM »
So we're all super awesome at jumping on bandwagons, busy with kids, work, being professional hobos, etc.

Let's make a list of games we know are being played by either us, Farstar, RvB... whoever on a weekly basis. That way, if we want to play together, we at least know when something is happening anyway.

Maybe it's only EVE and PS2, but at least we'll know.

The Dog & Duck / Reliable paid US proxy service?
« on: May 29, 2013, 02:28:32 PM »
Can anyone recommend a paid US proxy service they have used or know someone that's happy using it?

I need to do a lot of Google searches for US results and want to do them from a US IP. All the tricks in the Google book simply can't get me search results I can trust from over here.

General Gaming / Neverwinter
« on: May 05, 2013, 07:01:39 PM »
So Garry pointed me to http://nw.perfectworld.com/ that has been in open beta since a few days.

Free MMO that seems to mix D&D and Neverwinter Nights, from the makers of Star Trek Online (so you can use your account for that if you have one).

I have a Trickster Rogue. Awesome class. They go all Nightcrawler from X-men with their special attack, poofing all over the place and raping enemies in the face while doing so. I also added a Tiefling Control Wizard. But I really hate doing the same content more than once... so he'll take a backseat I think. Although the effect of the teleport ability is quite majestic.

The playing style is more arcade like a third person shooter. Main attacks are used with LMB and RMB, special attacks under Q+E+R and number keys. Mouse pointer mode is also available after pressing ALT and is mainly used to manage menus and items. This makes the gameplay quite involving because you have to actively twist and turn and run around, as opposed to going click, click, click and standing still all the time. I assume all classes have some sort of 'get your butt out of trouble' jump/shift/teleport, which is really nice to close distances quickly, dodging AOE spells or quite simply things like arrow attacks. Guardian seem to raise their shield instead of doing a jumpy thing. People say they're the most boring class at the moment and a tad underpowered compared to the rest.

Also, there's the main questline right from the start that you're pulled in to. Sidequests seem to integrate into the main questing very fluently. So even though you are going 'Kill x, Collect Y', it doesn't really feel like it because you always seem to be 'on' the main quest.

I particularly appreciate the optional quest path in the form of gently twinkling lights guiding you toward your quest or map target.

Founder packs are available until 9th May containing special items, but the cheapest one seems utter shit. So unless you're willing to shell out 60 or 200 bucks, I'd pass on those. AFAIK there shouldn't be any wipes. It's more of a soft launch.

Game seems relatively easy. So far I've died once because I turned a corner not expecting ten enemies to pile on me including a toughie and a trap. Other times I've been running around doing quests 3 or 4 levels above my own without any trouble. Especially now I've got a healer companion. Don't really need a healer, but it saves money on all the pots as there's no out of combat regen. Just campfires. Mmmm campfires.

There's a distinct explory feel though. Lots of sewers and caves and underground or interior stuff. You can cut to the chase and follow the twinklies if you've got them turned on. Or you can murder everything and take side corridors and you'll find treasure chests and such. These little quest instances are very doable timewise. They don't feel boring.

Course the game is repetitive like any other mmo, but running around 3rd person slicing and dicing everything in my path while poofing around and going in and out of stealth and slapping some guaranteed crits on tough guys is still fulfilling.

Spent some time on my rogue running around with a wizard today doing some quests. Scary shit. Pretty sure everything is getting the shit tweaked out of it, because so far it all seems a bit OP.

You can find me under:

Wubblebutt - Halfling Trickster Rogue

Don't think it matters, but there are 3 shards you can create a character on. I'm on the one with a B. Beholder or something.

And mostly for my own reference because you need to log in and fill out a form to even see the EUR to ZEN ratio:

€44.99 - 4,950 + 350
€27.99 - 3,080 + 220
€18.99 - 2,090 + 110
€9.99 - 1,100
€4.99 - 540

The Walking Dead Season 3 Comic-Con Trailer

<3

It seems they're merging events from the comic books, so they're happening at the same time instead of one after another.

Again, if you haven't read them yet, I highly recommend reading the comics. They're awesome. Especially with Michonne. And the governor.
Just read them. If only for the fact that Carl shoots Shane in issue 6.

So many awesome things in the comic books that are so not going to make it to the tv series because they're too gruesome.
