The Dog & Duck / Re: Game of Thrones
« on: December 13, 2011, 07:28:28 AM »
Honsetly I thought that series was shit. All they did was talk about how they'd done things in the past. They seriously fucked up when they made their decision to not have anything happen for 5 episodes. They should've shifted events around more to better suite the TV-format. Books and film/TV don't have the same dramaturgy and it's a big mistake to think they do.
I read the first book (and started the second book) and found it to be okayish. Biggest problem was the ridiculous characters. They were either super noble, super assholes, super witty, super "intregy" and so on. Only character that I liked (me and everyone else) was Tyrion the Imp. He's in the same league as Gollum in Lord of the Rings. He isn't black or white, but actually making decisions that ain't based on stereotypes. The rest of 'em were rather bland.
I got so sick and tired of the whole "fuck, eat, shit, kill" being the core of the books and series. But I guess that fits HBO like a hand in a glove. Since they're on cable they can show whatever they want. I love cable! The best shows are on cable! But it feels like HBO has OCD, if it can show boobs and vaginas they will squeeze every tit they can find in there. It gets a bit tiresome and repetitive.
The most interesting part of it was the White Walkers and they were hardly explored at all.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoilers content.
Me and my brother used to buy a plate of kebab and eat while watching the show. A month or two after it ended we were in the same restaurant getting kebab again and we both realised that we hadn't seen Game of Thrones for a while. That was the extent of the impression that show made on us. That we ate kebab to it..

To end this rant.. I'd love to see a mini-series adaptation of Wheel of Time with Kate Beckinsale in the role of Moiraine. But at the same time I'd rather not see it cause it would be extremely hard to do those books justice. There are so so many layers that would be very difficult to convey on a screen. I love how most of the characters in it are all grey. Heck even the main good guy is bordeline insane and evil! The Aes Sedai (who're supposed to be good according to Tolkien traditions) are constantly working an angle to get ahead, no matter who they fuck over.

Now I'm going back to bed. Had accidentally left my lock on the laundry room door and my neighbour woke me up to get it removed. Some Pink Floyd in the speakers and I'll sleep like a baby :)

I'm already planning to take over the world. Hunters need to stick together so I'll let you become an evil lieutenant in the new world order! The evil part is important ^^

i got about 6 mins in. what a bunch of freaks.
I don't think they're freaks!
They certainly need to reprioritize their lives. Most of 'em seemed to be very nice persons. That paladin need to come out of the closet though. If he's that ashamed of playing WoW he should quit.
And honestly I can't figure out how they can afford to play all day and all night. The Russians I can understand but not the Europeans and Americans. I wonder why there are no Swedish guilds up there. We've got all these socialist thingies that allows you to survive without a job for years. You might not be wealthy but you get by.
Eric (leader of Blood Legion) seems to have his head and heart in the right place. The girl in the same guild comes off as a whacko, wanting to break the persons who for whatever reason can't put in the same amount of time as her.

And from what I understand NO companions in Operations (is that right?) (at least in place of players), so no stupid "pet" issues - remember hunter pets doing stupid stuff in raids back in wow?

Hunter pets doing stupid things? What are you on about? There are no stupid pets, only stupid players ^^
I was a masterpuller with my pet back in vanilla!

I wouldn't mind doing a bit of casual raiding. There are three difficulty levels; normal, hard and nightmare. From what I've understood normal is for the casuals and pretty easy. As long as people know their shit it should be pretty fun.
I was part of a hardcore raidingguild in WoW vanilla where we got like all server-firsts, but what really made it fun was the relaxed atmosphere where we talked smack on Vent a couple of hours every night. People trusted each other to know what to do that we didn't need to be super concentrated and yell at one other. It was simply relaxing. The WoW community moved away from that and that's when I lost all interest in raiding. I was even booted from a guild a year ago for "relaxing" to much on vent ;)

About meds. I can testify that they can really fuck you up. But they can also help. It varies from person to person. I was heavily medicated for years, your friend and I were pretty much alike. From the inside things just seemed foggy and grey and I didn't really react to things around me as I should've. This was both a blessing and a curse. Things that would've kept me from going to work didn't affect me as much. But at the same time things that would've made me happy didn't to the same extent as without meds. They evened out my emotional state.
There are lots of different kinds of meds and dosages. One might be kickass for some while not so much for others, and vice versa. It took me and my doctor some time to figure out what worked for me. Meds usually take 2-4 weeks before they have any effect so finding the right ones and a good dosage can be very frustrating. There are side-effects to just about all meds that can be pretty severe in the beginning but your body gets used to 'em and compensates after a while. My therapist talked about new meds coming out with much less side-effects, maybe they're here already.
About a year ago I felt I wanted to stop and talked it over with my doctor. We gradually lowered the dosage of one after another until I was drugsfree. During this time I also started exercising with a great personal trainer (cost fuckloads of money but it was so worth it!) and switched meds for physical training. It worked wonders! I got more energy, saw the world in full techno-colour again and started doing other things with the extra time I got from not being tired all the time. This is why I so highly recommend exercise.

I'm not trying to scare anyone away from meds. They worked for me. But it's not the answer to all problems. They can help you get over obstacles but at the same time they can become the obstacle. I'd recommend talking to a doctor or therapist about it and try it out if he/she thinks it can help you.

Also make sure you've got a safety-net of friends you can talk to. Mine are Spelmamma and Jargis :)

How about a courier job? By car.. If you've got a license. I had a workmate way way back that switched from being a postman (like me) to delivering packages by car and he loved it. Shouldn't put to much strain on your ankle and you get around to a lot of different places which at least I think is fun. I don't know what the economy looks like down there or how hard it is to find a job but at least with couriers it shouldn't be impossible to at least get a part-time gig.
Can't read Chinese ( :p ) so maybe that was what Warcold linked ^^

I hear ya. Been struggling with depression for as long as I can remember. Don't really know what it feels like to be dandy.
It's very tough to clean up ones own act. It seems impossible. The best help I've found are friends that can push me. A few years back I got a 50% sickleave from work (in Sweden that means you only work 50% but still get payd for 80%) and that gave me time to work on my shit. I started working out and that gave me lots and lots of energy. It also increases endorphins and other chemicals in your body making you feel better. I can really feel the difference when I'm not able to train for a while (like the last couple of weeks) and when I have a regular routine. Routines is another great tool. Set up a schedule for yourself.
Go to bed at decent hours so that you don't sleep through the entire day.
Go for a walk every day (I'd say at LEAST 1 hour, but recommend more) and the rougher the weather is the better.
If you can scrounge up the money for a gym do that as well, "pumping iron" feels great and gives better results, and faster, than going for walks. Not to devalue walks as they're great!
Get at least two cats (since you've got a girlfriend you can probably skip that step..).
Try to eat real dinners and lunches every day. I'm talking cooking here! Find new recipes and experiment with that on your free time.
Designate time for playing and if you're having problems not being able to keep to those get a friend/family member to put parental control on your account (SWTOR don't have this so just have a friend change the password each day, I'll be doing this).
Find a good author whose books you can enjoy (I HIGHLY recommend Kurt Vonnegut Jr. as he's simply brilliant. Very funny and easily read books but with a depth I haven't experienced elsewhere).
With book in hand go out to a café and spend the entire day reading there, no need to spend much money though, stick with a glass of water when you're thirsty and maybe a sandwich when you get hungry.

Most important thing to remember. Do NOT fracking give up just 'cause you ain't getting the results you want the first day or week. This shit takes time.

About jobs.. I havn't got the slightest idea. Don't really know what you've got down there to begin with. But as an example. My classmate will be quitting school to work for his dad a few months driving around the country marking model homes. I didn't fully understand what he was going to do so I'm having a hard time explaining it. But he's basically just going to drive around filling in forms and taking pictures. Not a desk-job nor a postman running his knees, back, ankles and shoulders into the ground.

I hope some of this helps.

GRIMLOCK!!!

<-- My avatar!
Grimlock and Scorponok are the two most interesting characters in Transformers. I love it how they're always standing on the line between good and evil. I've got a tatoo planned with those two and Optimus Prime/Shockwave :D As a student I don't exactly have the cash to get it done though. Stargate tatoo planned as well ^^

I'll go Commando for my first character. Leveling as a DPS with (http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#8000cZMIkrRMdRkfzZf.1) but later I'll switch to (http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#800bfRRRzfdkqZrco.1) to heal. The switch might come around 20-30 depending on how hard the flashpoints are getting and how fast leveling is (using a DPS companion).
Got trees ready for my Gunslinger/Sniper (http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#700bsrrdRsRxzZ0cZG.1) and my Jedi Shadow tank (http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#601bIbRkrskbsZZf0cM.1).
I liked all three classes in beta but didn't get past lvl 16 on an y of 'em. I might get bored and change class ;)

Oh Thor. I hate having my picture taken.. But here goes nothing..

Dunno if I'm doing this right. Don't post many pictures on the interweb (that's what you youngsters call it these days, right?).

I really really hope they don't go down the WoW road. There should be room for supportclasses as well that might not top any dps meters but bring other valuable abilities to the game. Loltroll (easier to pronounce than LotRO) has support classes if I ain't mistaken.
I would've preferd if they'd taken more than just a page from Stargate Worlds and totally skipped the trinity system in favour of a cover/avoidance/tactical system. But I guess that would've been a bit tougher with Jedi/Sith melee classes in the mix.

Oh snap! I was totally going to say that! But as a new guy I didn't wanna piss off any deluded person who thinks the new movies are anything but awful ;)
