Slightly over half a year after Techtonic Plates, a new mix of mine. Previous mixes were created by collecting good tracks from compilations or live sets over a period. This time I set off on Beatport to find good tracks myself. That was the process like I always did in the 90s (like many others), but in those days with stacks of vinyl in record shops.

I had three tracks in mind, the Warm Up (# 2), Pale Horses (# 7) and the dirty, dirty Bauhaus (# 14), a very substantial minimal techno record. So a minimal track at 110 bpm, a wonderful record at 120 bpm to 125bpm techno and rancid. And 70 minutes of silence to fill up. The tracklist:

01. Jimmy Edgar - Bthere
02. Trickski - The Warm Up
03. Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Mix)
04. 2raumwohnung - Rette Mich Spaeter (Robert Babicz Extended Mix)
05. May. Chymera - Ghosts
06. Alexander Kowalski - Reset
07. Moby - Pale Horses (Gui Boratto's Last Window Remix)
08. Alexander Kowalski - The Heat of the Night
09. Kev OBrien - Valentines and 909's
10. Juspio - Frozen Light (Chris Fortier Remix)
11. Dirty Doering - Loco (d_func's Stripped to the Bone Rework)
12. Secret Cinema - Basically
13. Alexander Kowalski - It's Been a Long Way (Redux Mix)
14. Chris Liebing and Tommy Four Seven - Bauhaus (Sledge / Mallet Mix)
15. Collabs - magnit Express
16. Gui Boratto - No Turning Back
download

The first album I fell in love with immediately. Be There. That early '90s basic groove. Lovely slow and languid and fit nicely with number two. Number 3 was an old acquaintance whom I picked from the shelve, now I was at 108 bpm anyway. Beautiful track, fresh and summery. Robert Babicz usually does more minimal tracks, but always knows how to bring out the emotion from dancemusic. His remix of Rette mich Spaeter I find it very nice fit after the earlier ones and is deliciously fresh and summery. I hadn't quite put the two tracks over each other correctly in Ableton, but the result of the transition I found to be very nice! I added the 3 extra mp3's in the zip-file, so you can hear the two original clips forming the transition. Pure luck! The transition from 108 bpm to 120 bpm is not subtle because of a swoosh sound in Rette mich. I unfortunately had no better solution.

After that: Ghost, a little more depth, but still fresh and melodic. Reset makes it a little more 'rough'. Alexander Kowalski is the main supplier in the mix with four tracks. After Reset something more beautiful: Pale Horses. Gui Boratto also knows well how to catch the emotion in this track. Really a beautiful picture, especially halfway when the chords keep on changing. Lovely sad, especially with those sob in the sounds. Still, I can not stop my head when I listen to the track. Again a record of Alexander Kowalski, followed by three tracks from John Digweed Essential mix, rediscovered on Beatport. Very good record! Secret Cinema is also busy as ever with a nice track. The last record of Alexander Kowalski, number 13 in the mix, is very deep with a touch of melody, but then the pumping really starts. Considerably shortened, both the Sledge and Mallet Mix come slamming through your speakers. Speedy J and Chris Liebing complete the techno phase of the mix with their recognizable sound, Magnit Express. The mix wouldn't be my mix without happy ending, so Gui Boratto can end this mix with his beautiful No Turning Back.

'Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future.'

'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.'

Portishead's sound fits my mood on this gloomy, rainy day.
Didnt know this song yet. Quite like both the song and it's clip.

Vince made another mix: Eclectic Electric - Freaque Chique Electrique

Quote
After my recent mix, I wanted to do another one, but a different genre I’m used to: Disco.

It’s a sound you don’t hear often, but nowadays there are quite a lot of records which pay homage to the sound of yore, the 70’s and 80’s sound. In 2008 I was pleasantly surprised by Balance Electric vol 04 mixed by Agent 86. For me it was the first compilation with music like this, but at the same time the compilation had created a blueprint of what a compilation like this should sound like.

While browsing for tracks for my previous mix, I stumbled upon the second track of this mix, which totally captured the sound I was looking for. Inspiration was born.

Although the tracks are quite obscure, most of them are brand new, like the opening track. Nice and slow and disco-y, a good start! The second track fitted right in, but some editing was needed because of an annoying sound. Luckily, you don’t hear any remnants of it!

The third track sounds familiar to me, but the 80’s sound is unmistakenly present. The fourth track has been a favorite of mine from Science Fiction Jazz 12, cool track, especially the lyrics. Track 5 and 6 have those lighthearted lyrics which fit this style perfectly. The transition between the two sound pretty cool!

Track 7 has that 70’s sound and track 8 was the other favorite from Science Fiction Jazz 12. Track 9 and 10 have lighthearted melodies close to the disco sound, but I wanted a little change of pace around this time in the mix. Jimmy Edgar is the producer of track 11. Some people would describe this track as sexy, I would call it perverted, obscene and downright filthy. I love it! The track after that is very much in line with what I usually play, but I think it suits this mix well. After that, a nice track I found in the Breaks section on Beatport. It is picked up quite nicely by track 14, an electro poppy track. One of the better transitions of the mix.

Track 15 and 16 have a good bassline and some nice melodies. Track 17 ends with a track you would dance to on the floor. I slow down the mix again for a nice chill out track.

Eclectic Electric is going to be series, at least, I hope so. It has been very nice working on this mix and I have learned a lot creating it!

PS: Somehow the cue-sheet was cut, these two tracks are missing

"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take away from them the power to create money and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create money." Josiah Stamp (Governor Bank of England 1928-41)
