Title: DC Universe Online
Post by: Caradir on July 26, 2010, 06:48:31 PM
Not been keeping my eyes on this one, with it going through the release/cancelled/release game, but heres the cinematic trailer that sets the story for this game

Still not sure - SOE (and Warner Bros) (both of whom fucked MxO in this ass and SOE well....).

TBH though another surperhero mmo couldnt interest me unless they really deviate from the "wow" model.

Video is shiny mind.

yeah make a CGI movie with that story :) (would be 100x better than that last Superman torture)

Trailer is fun. Love 'evil' Supes.

I hear that this is supposed to be F2P, so if so, I'll be picking it up.

Not F2P (its an SOE game, so if it ever does it'll be a crappy implementation).

Games very much CoH/Co (to me) with better graphics and real actual superheroes.

Worth a punt instead of beers for lunch ;)

I would have given this a go but put off the idea of  a superheroes MMO by the horror that was chamions online.

Better graphics, an actual plot, recognisable superheroes you work with and for.

But still similar in vein to coh/champions..

Imo its worth a play just for rolling though stuff with superman and batman and the green lantern etc And fighting Joker/bane and such.

F2P is live.

Looks pretty cool so far, a fair bit more polished than Champions Online, though much of the same thing.

I've created two toons:

Batman wannabe Wraithwing and Superman wannabe Stalwart Sentinel.

If anyone fancies a go, let me know.

Not really got far enough into it to tell.

Only two character slots available. Not seen any restrictions costume wise that annoy me yet, been able to create the toons I wanted with no hassle so far.

Powers seem somewhat limited.

Fire, Ice, Gadgets, Magic, Mental and Nature I think. Was hoping for good old Super Strength.

Apparently you can only do missions to level 30, but again, don't know enough about the game to tell whether thats crap or not.

Think Cap is 50 and super strength may iirc be an unlockable during the levelling paths, but its been a while.

See I have a massive issue with F2P....blah blah blah troll comment...

But seriously...I've toed the line with this game for a ages, is it worth me spending ages downloading on my 2.5MB connection to give it a go, or should I just save my bandwidth? Not a huge fan of superhero stuff, but the idea of getting into a superhero MMO sounds cool. Played City of Heroes once before and wasn't impressed, how does it compare?

IIRC at about level 10 you open up the Mentor path of powers so im not sure Batmans will eb super strength ;)

Actual superheroes you recognise from movies/comics etc

A plot that kinda makes sense.

Generally its what CoH/Champs Online should have been if theyd had a license.

What's the hard drive size requirement for this game? I am disgustingly low on hard drive space, but not quite at the point where I'm willing to uninstall WoW, despite how few hours I've logged on it the last few weeks.

I also need to run WoW on just about the lowest settings. Will DCU run?

14.5GB or so.

And it should do fine tbh, its set that it can run on consoles and they arent as good as some low end pc's as it is :)

Ok, so Stalwart Sentinel is now level 9, and Wraithwing is level 7.

Much prefer Gotham over Metropolis. Using acrobatics to scale walls and jump from rooftop to rooftop in Crime Alley in Gotham is A.mazing. Purest win.

Bought me some points from the store for 4 quid to upgrade to premium.

Chat system sucks, and the power selections seems pretty limited when compared to CO, but other than that, pretty swish.

In this sort of game, its worth rolling both and giving them all a go, as the sheer amount of superhero icons you work with and against is just amazing.

And then personally in any 2 faction failover, I'll always go the "good" side as its just less aggravating that dealing with emo 12 yr olds who want to "throw off the man" and rebel in a game...

The session invalid thing you got bitten by during server wierdness, wouldnt let me login. Is all okay now however.

The other 6gb, I seemed to avoid, but it looks to be language files for other languages (lol people should all be able to read English :D). Id bear with it, its a fun pick up and play game when you cba with anything else.  Shame its got the usual SOE support to it however :(

Well i'm not sure the 6gb is a vaild thing. Apaprently if downloaded from steam the 6gb patch is needed to get the latest client. But i got it from Sony's own website, and the devs in the tech forum themselves say it shouldn't need 6bg. That's nearly half the game again. It's taken me 2 days to download the game, just for it to throw this up. What a load of gash.

The majority of negative reviews I've seen for this game cite that its controls are designed for a console-type controller, not a mouse and keyboard. How legitimate is this gripe? Because I suck beyond measure when it comes to a console-type controller. There is literally no point whatsoever to me downloading and trying this game if the controls only really work in a console-type controller configuration.

I happen to still retain a certain love for the old superhero genre and I'd like to give this game a go. But it's a lot of downloading for something I will instantly loathe.

Pad is easier, but m/k works alot better when you give it a proper go.  I have tried both while playing this on and off since release, and m/k just lets me do more at once imo. Also the whole able to talk and not have to use voice activation is grand too :)

There is also enough options for reconfiguring keys that you can mess around till you are happy, I think pad users are screwed on that front.
Title: Re: DC Universe Online

I had that a few times - one time I was there for AGES (like half an episode of the xfiles ages), so I quit client and just spammed login again, eventually got myself to character select / creation screen.

Server is hammered for want of a better word.  But once I got on this evening, its pretty lag free :)

Green lantern can do anything he puts his mind too ;) He can fly in space ffs

..as long as it doesnt involve the colour yellow. WORSE WEAKNESS EVER!!!!

Those green claws can change into different things, still not sure hoe the light combos work though :)

... How do you create a Green Lantern?

I am finding the game extremely enjoyable. Once I realised how to figure out where my quest zone was, after flying to the other end of the island.

Not flawless. I occasionally get bumped back a second or so. And something went wrong on the way to Gorilla Grod that I tried to solve by logging out and in, which unfortunately left me with a windowed screen I couldn't get rid of. Trying a reboot.

I also keep getting flattened by groups of three gorillas on the way to Grod. Am I right in thinking I'm soloing an instance?

I'm not very good at it yet, but awesome fun so far. Well worth the hours I spent downloading it today. I think I need to train some of my combo moves. Where's the Danger Room? Oh wait...

So they have this "megaserver" tech, that basically phases people as areas get busy, YET IT DOESNT FUCKING HELP WHEN 200K PC users are all trying to get on.

And to think at release there was bundles of servers...

(yes im in a 5k queue and bored).

indeed it does however also "phase" clues when you get close to them or indeed after you press "e" to start investigating :D

Taith, i got around the 6gb patch by dong the following..

1. Enter the game folder and move ONLY the stand alone files (NOT folders) in the root of the folder to a backup folder somewhere. These are the Launcher files.

2. Re-download the launcher to the game folder, when advised you already have a copy installed, tell it you are re-installing. The launcher will download as normal.

3. lauch. itll check, do a 2.5 mb patch and you'll be good to go

Apparently they are working on better access for legendary folks.

In other news it turns out that the Scarecrow alert event, its tailored for people at top end, anyone else entering has their stats adjusted to relevant numbers, but isnt given more abilities.

No wonder the group I tried it with the other day couldnt do it, as they were all under 10 (so no stances yet, or decent abilities) and I was like 12...

erm the fact that Scarecrow is 30 in that event didnt give that away to you?  Seriously its piss easy if youve done the solo mission chain for Scarecrow ;)

I downloaded the 6Gb in the end. Then was largely unable to do a mission, due to lag.

Switched to the US server and figured I'd try making a villain and unless I'm mistaken my villain is my third character. However, once I spawned I was being attacked by a Braniac drone I couldn't see.

Might give it another try after dinner, but right now they're just a tad fubar.

After days of not getting the lag (and a few sessions of getting in after 5k+ queues this weekend - as opposed to 300-600 during the weekdays) you mentioned, its awful now.   Bloody euros cant they all log off and go to sleep they have work or school tomorrow :D

At least we arent yanks+aussies.  OVER 9000 in their queues I understand.

It seems SOE are working on it, but wont give specifics (with the user base of their forums I understand that move), so whether its more servers, figuring out how badly their megaserver ideas got screwed with the level of interest in F2P or allowing console kiddies near anything other than COD or a football game etc etc

until they sort it though missions are undoable due to server side lag :S

so size of queue doesnt make a hell o difference if that isnt sorted.

*although according to their forum they had a downtime at 4am to increase capacity*

on another note as i cant do anything whilst playing teh agme i used my time to work out how light combos work

So you have your big green claws but cant combo. why is this?

simple to unlock 2nd combo in teh combo list you need to take that power so Miniguns for example

this will then allow you to do the (up to) 4 claw attacks then minigun combo

to get next part of combo  pick that skill at level up. So i like to do claws, minigun and whip lash :) ace combo.

You know, if this game pans out and holds my interest, I might have to cave and order the Green Lantern pack. I was a big Green Lantern fan for a while.

Some questions that you guys might be able to answer:

- Does your account automatically become a Premium account if you sent $5 in any way?

- Do you get 2 character slots on EU and 2 characters slots on US? Because somehow one of my characters copied across, and I filled the other two slots, so I either have 3 or 4 characters.

- Where are you going to keep up on news on what they're doing to increase capacity?

Flying around Metropolis, battling the minions of Gorilla Grodd and occasionally swooping down on a mugger or burglar was just great fun. I doubt the game has the depth to keep me playing for years, as WoW did, but I can see myself spending a while there. I look forward to them sorting out their capacity issues.

I bought the future Batman in the store and got upgraded. Basically, I think it's if you spend any amount of points in the store. To do that, you need to buy some SC points, hence the £4 for the minimum amount of points available.

I would imagine it's two characters slots per server, 6 with Premium.

I did the tour around Watchtower today. I spent the whole time going, "It's him! And her! And him! You're kidding me, him? Ahahahaha! Woo!"

It's been at least ten years since I regularly read superhero comics. I can't believe I still had that in me.

Once it hit busy times the game became largely unplayable again, but I did get a few good hours in today. Hit level 10, did that Hive instance, apparently became a Controller and ogled Kryptonian and House of El battle suits. I tried switching over to Gotham since I had a quest in the East End, but couldn't see any of my quest objectives.

I had 3/2 characters for a while. I think that only happened because I created a toon on one server while the other was down and couldn't verify how many I had. Back to a limit of 2 now.

I rather doubt they'll have new server capacity up and running by the weekend, but maybe next week. The game isn't flawless, but if it remains as fun as it is now I'll happily hero my way to level 30. I'd like to try the six different mentors too, since I get the impression you start in a different place for at least some of them.

place you start is same either Metro or Gotham

first few quests do vary. (ill try recall iirc)

Wonder Woman - Raven, Circe line, Giganta
Batman - Scarecrow, Bane ,Harley Quinn  then poison Ivy (most recent so i recall these correctly)
Superman - mostly Brainiac

Quote
DC Universe Online has had a lot to say about its recent free-to-play transition, with the game boasting a one million player increase since the change took place. But that's in the past already; what's en route in the near future? Well, today Sony Online Entertainment is announcing the latest round of DLC for the freshly F2P superhero game.

The new DLC is entitled Lightning Strikes, and it focuses on everyone's favorite speedster, Flash. The update will bring a variety of new content for veteran and fledgling players alike. So what can players look forward to when Lightning Strikes? We sat down with some of the game's developers to find out, so follow on past the cut and have a gander.

One of the key features being introduced with the new DLC is the new Electricity power set. Electricity-focused heroes will fill a hybrid role as they rain deadily lightning attacks upon their enemies and rejuvenate their allies with refreshing electric shocks. The healing mechanic available to characters who choose the power set is being termed Rescue Healing. Players can place an electrical charge on an ally, and when the target drops below a certain health threshold, the heal will kick in and shock the player back to good health. This fire-and-forget style of healing strikes a balance between the current healing power sets, allowing Electricity-powered players to fill a whole new niche. It's important to note that due to the number of issues that took place during the introduction of the Hard Light power set during the last DLC release, players will not be receiving a respec token with which to switch to the new power set. If you want to try Electricity out, you'll have to roll a new character from the ground up.

The Electricity power set will be split into two separate progression trees: Voltage and Amperage. Both trees will feature the power set's hybrid DPS-plus-healing, but one will be focused more on burst-type abilities while the other plays host to more preventative healing powers.

The new power set isn't all that's coming, however. After all, what would a Flash-themed DLC update be without a nice vacation to Central City? It would be unreasonable to expect the devs to build a new city from scratch with every content update, so the team is introducing a new type of instanced map using technology similar to that used by the game's megaservers. Each instance of Central City is an 8x4 block area of the city that can hold up to 50 players. Each time an instance reaches the 50-player cap, a new one will be opened, so players can come and go as they please.

Central City will feature new solo and group content as well as bounties and storylines, all of which take place outside of and around Central City's Flash museum. The main storyline players will be faced with is a Duo mission that focuses on Flash and his origin story. See, some idiots (namely, the Pied Piper and Abra Kadabra) have used Flash's Cosmic Treadmill to go back in time to the fateful night that Barry Allen received his powers in hopes of preventing the event from ever taking place. The heroes of DCUO can't let this happen because, duh, it's the freaking Flash, so it's up to them to go back in time (Flash can't do it himself because it would cause some kind of paradox) and ensure that Allen receives the his freak-accident powers as usual.

But what about the villains? Why should they care if the Flash gets his powers or not? That's just one fewer member of the Justice League to worry about, right? Wrong! If Barry Allen never becomes Flash, then Eobard Thawne -- better known as Flash's super-speedy counterpart Professor Zoom -- never gets his superpowers either, and that just doesn't sit right with him for some reason. In light of that, he tasks the villains with going back in time and making sure that Pied Piper and Abra Kadabra fail in their mission, thus ensuring that Professor Zoom's powers remain intact.

And of course, the New 52 is on every DC Comics fan's mind right now. Will DCUO be incorporating any aspects of the New 52 into the game? Chances are slim to none, at this point. While the devs are at liberty to explore the New 52, they also have their own stories that they want to tell, and of course it's a risky move to reboot an entire game universe from the ground up. As such, players probably shouldn't expect much relating to the New 52 anytime soon.

The Lightning Strikes DLC pack will be available for purchase sometime this year, and there's not a whole lot of year left, so players shouldn't have to wait long to get their Flash fix. Lightning Strikes will run players a cool $10, though Legendary-status subscribers will, of course, receive the new content free-of-charge. Stay tuned to Massively for more information on the update and its release date!

I'm still suffering a lot of lag when I try to play this game, but that could easily be due to Virgin Media's many problems lately.

Which is a bit of a shame considering how I just can't get into WoW at the moment.

Anyone know any good info sites for DCU? The game is starting to give me either/or stat gear and I have less than half an idea what to go for, with my psion controller hero and sorcerer healer villain.

I'm still quite enjoying this game, though I agree it hasn't quite got something. I plan to keep at it around Star Wars, but I'm very much still a clueless noob.

I don't suppose anyone knows what happens if you start as a blaster and then put points into dual-wield? Does the game cleverly switch for melee attacks or is it one or the other?

All the other weapon rypes have unlocked for me, but I have no idea if you can be two things at once.

I see. I'll take a look at it with that in mind. Got 4 skill points I've been saving until I figure this out.

Realistically, those 4 points aren't the reason end-boss Bruno Mannheim flattened me seven or eight times in a row in the Intergang instance. But it sure was hard to remember that as I kept dying. ::)

Not regularly. I've got three toons at level 30 and I'm feeling like I've done enough of the levelling aspect of the game, so for me it's either find a League for endgame or find something else. I'm ramping up on the writing, so it's more likely to be option B.

Feel free to add my toons to your friends list though. I'd be happy to help out with some of the tougher hideouts, and if you get to level 30 we can hit some duos.

My hero toons are:
- Psilance, level 30 psion
- Lightshaper, level 30 Green Lantern
- Coldrune, level 20 ice

My villain toon is a level 30 sorcerer named Noctirian, but I hardly play him.

There are a couple of hideouts that are a complete pain in the low 20s, the Green Lantern fight in City Hall and the head of Intergang in Gotham. If you get that far, let me know and we'll see if they can be duoed.
