Title: Why
Post by: Goatboy on February 10, 2012, 03:02:21 PM
Why does WoW manage to keep on captivating so many paying subscribers and so many other mmo's seem to fizzle out one after another in comparison?

simple wow is 7 years polished and the others are usually released in a rushed not finished manner(as finished as any mmo can be).

edit:

and people are too impatient to wait for the new ones to grow and mature.

And to answer the unasked question, no, I don't think SWTOR is going to fizzle out and die.

To many hardcore SW fans for that.

IDD there, SWG didnt, despite SOE + LucasArts best efforts.

To answer why is wow so big, it was many peoples first and ONLY mmo, not everyone is a traveller of the mmo-space or as jaded.  People stick to what they know/enjoy/get used to.

Yes its also polished, and in some ways does provide a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Nothing else, not even blizzards next mmo will have that affect on the market again, its an outlying statistic, an oddity that wont crop up anymore.  It blew the MMO market open as wide as it did all on its own, without ever meaning too.

What were the MMO numbers pre-WoW, and what kind of numbers do these fizzlers usually end up pulling?

EQ / DAOC / AC 1 and 2 were the big boys, talking a few hundred k subs at peak.  Planetside and SWG coming in behind them.

Post wow the list is huge, and they seem to average - and usually break even with - 350k subs or there abouts.

EVE is the only pre and post wow mmo to keep sub numbers rising (despite last summers hiccup) and maintain the sub model, rather than move to an F2P model.

Rule of thumb - is this what it takes to stay in business?
