Title: The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Get a premium Skyrim map with your preorder

Making real maps of our fantasy worlds is an Elder Scrolls tradition. As Todd Howard said all the way back in a Morrowind blog post, “There’s something about having a physical object in your hands that feels like it’s part of this other world, that you are that person in the game, finding your way among the hills.”

With that in mind, today we are announcing that anyone who preorders Skyrim will automatically receive a premium quality world map with their copy as a no-extra-cost-to-you bonus.

To guarantee your copy of your premium quality world map, please pre-order today.

Update: We’ve received plenty of questions about the map. So you know, it’s a high-grade material that has a feel similar to burlap, and will be available in North America and European territories. There will be a regular paper map included in all copies of the game, but if you want to get the premium map, we recommend pre-ordering the game.

i wants it baaaddd

    When they hear triumph's shout
Dragonborn for your blessing we pray

    And the scrolls have fortold
Of black wings in the cold
That when brothers wage war come unfurled
    Alduin bane of kings
    Ancient shadow unbound
With a hunger to swallow the world

IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!

so today is Friday - 3 ;)

Now

Argonian or Bosmer for first character?
Quote
Five large cities, comparatively larger than those in Oblivion, are available to explore (and to be attacked from above by dragons), along with a wider variety of caves and subterranean areas. The main five cities will be walled and located in separate worlds to conserve memory (like Oblivion) but the 15 or so minor cities will be open (like Morrowind). Fast-traveling to locations already discovered has returned. Cooking, farming, wood-cutting, and mining, in addition to weapon-smithing, can be done in different towns. Children are also featured in the game.

New factions include the Companions (mercenary guild), the College of Winterhold (magic guild) and the Stormcloaks (rebels), as well as the return of the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood.

The 150+ dungeons in the game were created by a team of eight, whereas Oblivion's dungeons were all created by one designer.

Upon a giant mountain, the Throat of the World houses the home of the Greybeards, High Hrothgar, at the head of 7,000 steps.

Mounts have been confirmed as something the team is looking into, and horses are confirmed. Hostile creatures include: giant spiders, elk, trolls, ice wraiths, zombies, sabre-toothed cats, wolves, ice golems, skeletons, draugrs and dragons.

Some creatures such as mammoths and giants are non-hostile.

"Dynamic shadows" will be used and snow will fall and accumulate dynamically. Plants will move more believably with the wind, and the water in the game will actually flow along a course.

So i avoided reading as much as i could but now i cant help myself ;)

Lockpicking will be just like Fallout 3

Crafting is in
Enchantment, Smithing and Alchemy More like MMO crafting than previous.

I was worried about Skills and levelling as they "streamlined" the process (i translated as console kiddies go wah if its hard), seems its very similar to that in Fallout skill ups (any, no more major/minor skills) add up until you level up. At level up you get a perk to spend, each skill has its own perk tree

how does it compare to arena/daggerfall, that's what i wonder

oh graphics of this are a hell of a lot better, I'm sure..

But what i want is an open world, random quests (where you can be the hero of a town and unknown in the next) etc etc. i didn't find that back in oblivion that's why i think oblivion sucks monkey balls..

so is it oblivion like or more old style :D

On a more positive note :P

Quests will be generated dynamically based on your progress :)

Quote
Todd Howard stated that the Radiant Quest system in the game will randomly generate things for you to do based on your own personal progress. From collecting flowers for an aspiring alchemist to randomly generated missions from the likes of the Dark Brotherhood, Howard stated that “The vibe of the game is that it’s something that you can play forever.”

I agree with you, but AFAIK it's been ported from xbox 360 to all other platforms, so most if not all of the reveiws will be on the 360. I'll be getting it on PS3 I think. my PC needs a bit of upgrading for this latest burst of games. I wonder if it'll be compatible with KB and mouse on the PS as that's what i'm curently doing on Battlefield 3 and works well.

To make it look nicer regardless of gfx settings, tweak the the skyrim prefs ini file found in my games/skyrim.

You can work some serious wonders with that - google / skyrim forums help. (and can also remove stupid question icons and even the compass!)

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Post by: Caradir on November 13, 2011, 02:15:40 PM
So 14 hours or so in (and ini tweaks) i can say that i like it but not all of it.

no stats:0 pure dumbing down for th console kiddies and i dont like it, i want stats to increase my carry limit or my speed not a simple health/magicka or stamina at level up.

UI: the single worst part. Console friendly but PC unfriendly. sometimes it doesnt even react to mouse clicks and acts like you used tab, very annoying in conversations or when trying to sell stuff.

Favourites: good as it pauses and lets you change up spells etc, bad as it pauses and lets you heal from 0 to full (wait there troll im gonna drink 10 potions now)

GFX are ok not quite what id expect from a new PC game but then console kiddies rule ;)

Story however is EPIC (as expected) 14 hours and i know 3 words and 3 shouts (1 of which i dont have a word from), and the rest (other than dragons) is a moral choice of freedom or continued occupation for Skyrim. (being Scots wonder what im choosing ;)  )

Ive only seen 1 dragon so far and thats the one i killed to discover i was dragonborn

Perks as can be expected, i like them especially the new crafting associated ones (smithing 100 to make stuff from my dragon bones)

Roll on the next 300 hours or so ;)

not best game ever but pretty damn close and could be with improvements aimed at PC. Its still a better "port" than many other games yet fails to deliver aspects that PC players look for.

oh and it has werewolves. can you turn into one? im not telling ;)

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Post by: Caradir on November 13, 2011, 05:07:52 PM
FYI: reason i was finding shouts (exploring) and not getting souls to activate them, was due to needing to advance main story for dragons to actually awaken ;)

Tried to do an "Oblivion" :D

24 hours played. I'm a werewolf, about to meet a vampire, part of Dark Brotherhood, Student of Mages College, in process of joining the Imperial Guard, already a thane with my own personal warrior guardian and making good progress with the story. Yet it still feels like i've only just scratched the surface. What a game!!

Loving the level up stuff with perks, although can never decide. I'm pretty much a Viking, 1 handed/shield but put some stuff into sneak for the Dark brotherhood quests.

And it sends shivers down your spine when you're riding along and just hear a massive roar above you, followed by a huge shadow on the ground and the sky turning grey. Yep...that'll be a dragon.

observation: the higher up you go in elevation, the more difficult things are, particularly dungeons.

What do you think? seem right to you?
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Post by: Chug on November 14, 2011, 01:30:33 PM
Not sure, but they did alter the MOB levels by area instead of levelling them up with you. I did read also that in most dungeons the level is locked to yours on entering it, and stays locked. So you enter at level 10 for instance, and fail, you can come back to it at level 12 and it wont be as impossible.

what i do know is Blood Dragons are a bit easier since getting the second word of flame breath shout.

the only second word I have is from the main story quests from the greybeards. Do you get second words in the same way you get the initial one?

yes, then ofc you needs souls to make use of them.

for instance i wandered up the mountain near Saarthal(sp?) and found word 2 of ice form (after killing the dragon guarding it)

Not liking the game so much, its just there isnt anything else to do (Although i do play a lot of the binding of isaac)
- the map is the size of a postage stamp.
- You got guys talking about going to the big city. Closest city was what 4 min on foot. for the love of god lazy bastard, walk
- you can only have 1 guy following you, and you cant decide what he/she should equip.
- as for exploring. there is no challenge, you practically trip over the different sites. its harder to walk from a to b without actually going to that new site
- the whole console interface sucks monkehballs
- leveling OMG im not 10 (mentally i am 11 and 11 does not equal 10)
- WHERE IS MY FUCKING CART
- all shops i run into have not enough gold for the crap i want to sell them
- where are all my exciting talking opportunities
- the average peasant there bitches more than i do

it does look ok though

-Map small? really i think its HUGE, i mean it feels epic.
- country bumpkins always think anything is big
-dont play easy mode with a follower ;)
- turn off compass
- indeed it does lets hope for a PC friendly one, either official or modded will do thanks
-what? what? (do you mean no stats? thats my biggest gripe)
- Wheelwrights still working on it, until then suck it up and stop being a loot whore, or pick stamina at level up that increases your carry weight, or buy a house to store your crap in between dungeons.
- its called speech, as that improves so do shops cash and you will be able to invest in them to give them more cash.
- mostly in taverns or guild buildings, sometimes random scrubs want you to do shit, try using shouts in town thats fun.
- they are inthe middle of a civil war and Dragons are being reborn all around, wouldnt you bitch?

Yeah its OK looking blame the 5 year old console and not your newer PC GFX card. ( buit you have used the ini tweaks posted above to make it look better havent you?)

That pic is awesome, Garry. Made me chuckle.

Pretty much done all of the Whiterun stuff apart from all of the Companions chain. I won't divulge in any spoilers, but i've just started and EPIC dark brotherhood quest line. Actually 'EPIC' doesn't cover it. Also just rolled up in Riften to do some city quests and have a look at the Thieves guild.

Get some vampire dust, eat said dust. Then lolololol
invisibility?

Yeah, was brilliant.

(Im currently eating random stuff, im like a 2yr old!)

You done any of the alchemy stuff yet? Eating the stuff is good to find out what potions it'll make

Nope, quite literally eating the stuff. My warrior isnt very bright.

Regards the crafting system.  This is how it should be in all those generic Diku-Mud mmos out there or soon to be out.  Rather than the copout easy routes those sorts of linear levelling games take.

- try eldarscrolls: arena or daggerfall, this is small
- they live next to it. they are lazy
- followers easy READ AND WEEP(from RPS)
Quote
Ahhhh, Lydia. She was the most glooooorious creature under the suns. Marie, Ajira, Akorithi. Rolled into one.

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia
Now have you met Lydia?
Lydia the uuuuuuuseless companion

She has eyes that folks adore so
And a breastplate even more so

Lydia, oh Lydia, as much use as chlamydia
Oh Lydia the queen of to-dos
In a doorway she’ll stand, if given the chance
Blocking access to chests is her foremost romance
Her ultimate goal is to block your advance
You can’t go anywhere with Lydia

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

When her bow is unfurled, she’ll fire arrows at the world
But targets need not bother her
She’ll miss rats in Ivarstead, spiders, the undead
And not trouble the wolves of High Hrothgar

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia?
Oh Lydia the uuuuuuuseless companion
When you go into a basement
At the entrance she’ll make her encampment

Lydia, oh Lydia, get lost in Kolskeggr
Oh Lydia the queen of to-dos
To both combat and tact you only bring shame
With every yawn you emit, my ire I proclaim
Yet whenever you die I load my savegame
You can’t go anywhere with Lydia

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la
- the next site is right there, why would i use compass anyways (to walk the mediocre longer distances)
- tightass console newbs
- damn right i mean no stats, im older than 10
- lootwhore is my life how do you want me to move all my crap to my house than! (also why dont i get a discount to my house with speachcraft?)
- i just sell to shops, if i want something i'll steal it, but cant steal a house now can you!
- didnt try shouts in towns, yet (will do that when i go playing after typing this post), but still they dont want you to go to a random generated dungeon, its all scripted and predictable
- well they could do something else than bitch. that would help a bit at least. And you shouldn't bitch if you build your house next to a burial mount and you know the dead can walk that the burial mount 10 meters from your house is haunted, you just shouldn't bitch. the mount was there first, if anyone should bitch, its the burial mount
- that was actually my compliment, it looks ok. didnt bother with tweaking it

but is was more like really exploring, there was something there, but you had to go out and look

here your next encounter can be spotted from whatever dungeon you just left

also that horse sucks
lost it once and had to travel all the way back to the guy selling it to pick it up again

Tip: Disable the gamepad option in the ingame settings (there isnt an ini line for it). Ups frames, lessens what mouse lag there is (even after turning off mouse acceleration) and generally makes stuff butter.

Come on now, Jon. Let's keep it clean.

Its cracked.com - it can be tasteless :)

Anyways quoting:

Quote
5 Personality Flaws Skyrim Forces You To Deal With

Quick: Look to your left, then look to your right. One of those people is a nerd. It's easy to tell which one, just look for the nerd-shaped hole in the universe where a person used to be. If you've been wondering why it's the geek rapture out there, it's because November is like gaming's sweeps month. Anybody with excess funds and poor impulse control problems is slowly starving to death in front of their computer or console right now. Zelda, Assassin's Creed, Batman, Battlecall: Field of Duty and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have all been released within a few weeks of one another. The most dangerous siren's call, for me, is sung by the latter: Skyrim is vast, complex and incredibly dense. Every aspect of it breathes authenticity and organicity. It is less a game than it is a fantastical life simulator. And that is very bad news for those of us who might be terrible assholes and still kind of in denial about it. Because so far, thanks to Skyrim, I've had to admit that I have ...

#5. An Incredibly Boring Personality
One of the first things my wife said, after watching me play Skyrim for a few minutes, was, "What must the computer think of you?"
That's because this is my play-style: "Is that a cave? Wait, what's down this path? Can I go in this house? I can? Rad! Some other time though, because that's a butterfly! I can pluck salmon out of the river, harvest mushrooms from stumps and tan leather? That's amazing!"
Watching me play Skyrim is like reading one of those Family Circus cartoon maps if little Billy paused periodically to fire an arrow into the back of somebody's head to steal their magical boots. The only consistent theme linking my actions together is that none of them, not a one, advance the game in any meaningful way.

"Yes, I will be doing this for hours." -- Me, I guess?
If you had come up to me a year ago, disc in hand, hopeful glimmer in your eye, and said that you'd designed a game about butterfly catching and leatherwork, and asked would I mind giving you some feedback? I would have spat in your eye and thrown it in the sewer, then harvested your tears to sell to a Chinese herbalist.
But in a world where you allow me to do anything -- fuel a political coup, join an assassin's guild, slay giants, battle dragons -- apparently green-sourcing my cooking ingredients becomes priority #1.

#4. A Problem With Authority
I'm not referring to just disobeying the orders of in-game authority figures (though to be clear, I absolutely do that all the time, and have, on occasion, opted to resist arrest rather than pay a bounty of $11 dollars). I'm talking about rebelling against the vague, nebulous authority of the game itself. Skyrim wants me to go the city and talk to the mayor about dragons.
OK.
That's kind of the point of the game: Let's get to the bottom of this dragon business.
And yet, the very second I'm told to go somewhere, it becomes direly important that I go literally everywhere else in the world first. But like all young punks with authority problems, I'm mostly just doing it to see where the limits are. Are you going to let me walk all the way to that mountain in the distance, Skyrim, or force me back to the quest with some bullshit invisible walls?
Am I supposed to save this beautiful maiden, Skyrim? All right. Is it cool if I just ... don't?
Oh, you want me to fight the usurper, Skyrim? Sure thing, but can I buy a house and spend an hour arranging the books first?
Unfortunately, Skyrim's answer to every one of those questions is a firm and resounding, "Yes. Absolutely. Go ahead and do all of those things whenever you want."
And that really, really, really fucking sucks.

"God, I'm so sick of having all of this freedom." -- Me, I guess?
Because I want to go save that wench, fight that bastard usurper and fell that dragon. I really do. It looks fun! Way more fun than introducing the Dewey Decimal system to Whiterun, at any rate. But you need to force me over there first, because I'm just not going to do it otherwise. I'm not faulting the game for giving me freedom or anything; I totally acknowledge that this is a personal failing within me. This terrible habit -- of scouting out every single other pathway before the main one -- may be a leftover impulse from older RPGs, where many areas became inaccessible after you advanced through them. So if you wanted to make sure you found all the secret spells and legendary weapons, you had to explore every other path before the right one, otherwise the story might drag you, kicking and screaming, away from the best toys. That's no longer the case with modern games. Most let you visit and revisit any area at any point, but it's too late for me: The behavior is learned, and the damage is done.
I'll harvest every fucking cabbage in this field before I so much as glance at the dragon's nest, and you can't stop me.
Even though I really wish you could.

#3. Rampant OCD (That Is Totally Eclipsed by My Laziness)
Skyrim as a virtual world is beautifully, meticulously, painfully complete in its detail. Bethesda has really upped the bar here, to the extent that I'm actually kind of worried they may have broken gaming for good. Every time I walk by an in-game bookcase now and discover that the developers haven't written out every word of every chapter of every book therein, I will feel a small, unreasonable twinge of disappointment. Skyrim did it; they've proved it was possible. What's your excuse, other developers?
That it's irrelevant? That it doesn't affect the gameplay?
So what? Skyrim's designers not only forged an extensive world with thousands of quests and characters, but they then sat down and authored what must be tens of thousands of pages of text just to complete the atmosphere. This is a world with its own stories, folklore, science and history. And you can read about it all in-game.
YOU can.
Because I'm sure as hell not going to.

"Fuck these books." -- Me, I guess?
Oh, I picked up the first book. And, in fact, was so awed at their artful thoroughness that I read it cover to cover.
"That was cool," I thought to myself, "and it really added to the story. I feel like I understand this world a little better."
For the second book, I did the same: "Wow. Even their economy is detailed here. This is completion on a whole other level."
The third book, I skimmed: "I don't really need to know about seed counts in a rival kingdom," I justified.
By the 10th book, I had stopped reading altogether. I've always suspected that I was mildly OCD, and video games -- with their menus, customization and puzzles -- brought it all out into the open.
"I spent an hour organizing my fictional inventory by the number of characters in the names of each item! I've got a disease!" I would cry.
And that's bullshit, of course. OCD isn't tidying up your menus. OCD is thinking you have to twist every knob on the stove eight times because you cracked your knuckles out of order, otherwise your heart will explode. Me? I'm just a bit of a control freak. And Skyrim helped me finally admit that to myself ... by giving me homework. I read through like 20 pages of books before my "terrible neurotic disease" was downgraded to a simple case of "throw that shit in the gutter-itis"

#2. A Fickle, Entitled Nature
Skyrim, like all massive sandbox games, has its fair share of glitches. When you're programming a virtual world, where thousands of individual elements interact under a potentially infinite variety of scenarios, it's practically inevitable that hiccups will arise. We're asking our game designers to take on the roles of demi-gods, and give birth to a complex, beautiful system of life, so that we gamers can murder and humiliate it when we get bored on the weekends. And for the most part, they do a fine job. So when something goes awry, breaks the fourth wall and pulls me out of the immersion, I forgive them, because I'm such a well-rounded and mature human being ...
"That's fine. You worked hard, guys. I forgive you." -- Me, totally.
That is, so long as that hiccup doesn't have the faintest negative impact on me as a player.
If the glitch does inconvenience me slightly, though, every ounce of that goodwill instantly dies, screaming and fear-peeing on itself. I may not have liked the poet/warrior that talked like The Swedish Chef, but goddammit, Skyrim, he was my only companion. He deserved to go out better than he did: Clipping through the floor of a mountain cave in the middle of a fight with a giant spider. I really don't think he was supposed to blink out of reality like that, unless I skipped past the story-arc where Sven met up with and joined the cast of Sliders.
Which, holy shit, you're super welcome for the DLC idea, Bethesda.

#1. The Worst Timing
I have yet to do a single thing in Skyrim in the proper order. I'm constantly showing up to some dude's castle that I've never seen before, only to hand over a mystical item that I'd mentally scratched off as garbage hours ago, and then sit and listen to the story be retroactively explained to me:
King: Wanderer! Thank the gods you've come! The prophecy told us that a mighty warrior would arise, worthy of wielding Fjalnir, the God-axe, and slaying the evil Demon Prince Synraith. We believe you to be that warrior. What say you, traveler? Will you accept this task?
Me: Yea, verily I shall accept thine task and vanq- wait, Synraith? Fiery dude in a floating city? Cape made out of screeching souls? Ahhh, shit. I already killed that guy.
King: You ... already slew the Demon Prince, the Knife in the Dark, the Void at the Heart of All Men, whose identity you did not learn until just now?
Me: Yup. I saw that castle floating up in the sky, and I wanted to know if I could jump up the rocks to get in the back way. It took a lot of reloads, but I finally managed to hop on up in there.
King: You "hopped on up" into the Abyssal Palace?
Me: Yeeeep, yep yep yep. Just squat-jumped on in there and looted the place. Then I killed that Sydney guy-
King: Synraith, Demon Prince of the Abyss.
Me: -yeah him. I ganked that guy. Mostly just to see if I could. Plus he looked like kind of a dick.
King: Indeed, the Foulest of the Foul was "kind of a dick." But you vanquished him without the aid of sacred Fjalnir, the God-axe?
Me: Totally. It wasn't even a thing. I just hid on top of a bookshelf where he couldn't reach me and shot him with arrows. Then I waited until he forgot I was shooting him, and did it all again to get the sneak damage bonus. Took a while, but he died all the same.
King: Forsooth! Thine heroic deeds are ... well, that sounds kind of fucked up, actually. Never thought I'd feel bad for He Who Devours. So you have no need of our sacred totem weapon?
Me: What, the gold dealy, with the shiny bits? Nah, I already stole that out of the display case four hours ago, before I knew who you were. I gave it to Sven, but he Quantum Leaped out of the game with that shit.
King: Huh. So. I guess ... the bards will ... sing of your tale now?
Me: Oh yeah? Sweet, let's hear it.
Bard: The hero came with eyes aflame / his tasks already done / the land was rescued all the same / but 'tis kind of a shitty song.
Me: Word.

I mostly run solo, but at least Lydia can carry a fair amount of lewt for you if you do bring her.
Wich makes me think of this:

Gave up on having a horse after loosing the second one to godknowswhat. Stupid thing will run away and hide(or ending up aggroing something nasty elsewhere) for butterflies and kittens, but if something thats actually DEADLY shows up it just got to stay and fight.

I also lost my horse a couple of times, it just wandered off, but it was always back at the horse vendor when i came to a town. (I dont mean i have to buy a new one, but it was just there or wandered there, my horse. its not some euphemism)

Downloaded, just need to find some time to check it out.

Also took a look at the early offerings on the Workshop, some of those look good. Especially the Open Cities one, as the loading screens into towns did jar a little.
