EVE Online / Skills needed for M10 expansion
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:20:26 PM »
Let's get some preasure off the Tech 3 thread, and keep things findable at same time.

The changes coming with the M10 expansion will have implications for skills that are handy to have, come all the changes.
There are prolly ppl around here who know better (and that's a good thing ;)), but let me give my amateur view of things.

Going to w-space will be like going to 0.0, plus from what I have read, NPC's can be very tough. Ppl will need good tanks, miners too. (as stated by Rub)
We will need ppl who can find the wormholes and scout the w-space behind it.
We will need ppl with big GUNZ. From what i've read in in-game channel HICs and HACs are recommended.
We will need logistics to keep us going there, and maybe even set up a POS -> orca-pilots? rub also recommended that some more ppl skilled in anchoring.
And we need good miners ofc.

Ofc, we need ppl who fill the roles too.
Combat pilots: We already got some, beo has some well skilled char(s), prolly Rub too. I know Akamine is training for HAC and me myself (Saf) too.
Scouts: Although some of the newer pilots might be tempted to train their chars for scouting (I am for one), my opinion is that we better have all pilots good at their own thing, rather than a lot of pilots mediocre at a lot of things. As I see it, in short term, we rather have newer ppl fulfill their short/medium term goals, (HAC + 2ndary skills for Saf for example) and depend on the ppl who are already skilled in scouting for the finding of wormholes and such (Constantine for certain and one of beo's chars? mebbe Rub has one too?). Once ppl are established in the role of their first choosing, they can also skill in scouting too.
I'd like to hear other's opinions about this though.
Miners with tanks: We got quite some nice miners in our group I think. Aicha will prolly be ruled out, as she will be transferred to Saf's account (so no more skilling and no running both chars simultaneously)
Orca-pilots: Rub/Beo. However, I've named those two names quite often now, I dont see em running 3 accounts effectively at same time...
Anchorers: Pretty easy skill to pick up at the side, 20-ish hours to lvl 3
POS-Gunners? Need anchoring lvl 5, which is about 25 days for me, but we might need some once we have (semi-)permanent POS that we might have to defend...

Thought I 'd do some wallet research, to see what comes in and what goes out (january 7th till and including 13th)

So far things go out mostly.
About 229M has been spent on member payouts (min/ore, datacores and salvage).
The Mineral Marketbuy wallet has become 187M lighter.

Income hasnt been that great.
Not counting the odd donations by our vets and mac ofc, the master wallet biggest income has been the sales of a tempest to a member for 65M.
Didnt bother to add all the tax, but 10M would be a nice estimation I think, if maybe a bit optimistic.

So last week Maadim lost 340M (not counting donations).
Ofc, what isnt mentioned here is the Orca that will come out of the cooker in less than 24 hours and will give us a nice positive result of about 200M  :D

Today I pulled my Tempest http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Tempest out of the cooker. Thanks to Constantine for cooking it, and ofc Thera for hauling some extra mins to make the build possible!
Just smashed my piggybank for most of the outfit and the insurance.  :D

Oh yeah, also bought 10 Maelstrom BPCs cause the Tempest is so damn ugly, so get mining guys!   ;D

The Dog & Duck / Google Pack? Get lost!
« on: January 07, 2009, 03:02:25 PM »
While alt-tabbing from one eve-account to the other I catch a glimpse of an unknown icon on my desktop. Huh?
Alt-tab to desktop to find a 'Norton Security Scan' shortcut. My first idea is: virus?
Right click: installed 4 hours ago... so couldnt have been my gf and it sure wasnt me.
Seems proper symantec thingy, so no virus prolly, but how did it get there?
Google (oh, the irony) gives a solution. Found on some forum: It seems this program was installed by 'Google Pack' (http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html). WTH!? Never heard of it, never installed it, never asked it to do stuff, never wanted it.

Sod off!

EVE Online / Minmatar post-BC ship
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:12:26 PM »
Thinking of where to go skill-wise I have been looking at http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Minmatar_Ships a lot.
Most HAC/BS-class ships dont get such good critics.

So far 2 options seem best to me: HAC or Marauder.

(HAC)
Quote
The Muninn has resistances that make it nigh-invulnerable to lasers. With 5 turret hardpoints, 7 high slots, 5 low slots (can be filled with damage-increasing modules), and 4 medium projectile turret skill bonuses, this ship is easily one of the most powerful ganking ships available.

But I've been looking at the Marauder even more:
Quote
The Vargur is the Minmatar Marauder. Menacing, fast and hard as a wall with its excellent shield tank potential, the Vargur is somewhat of a low-damage and low-range Marauder, if there can ever be such a thing, falling after the more impressive Kronos and Paladin as a turret-bearing ship of its class, because of the inferiority of projectile turrets damage-wise, especially artillery. Then again, looking at the bonuses that the Vargur receives to tracking and falloff, and its speed, it is fairly clear that it was not actually conceived as an artillery platform, but rather as a fearsome brawler, being able to charge fast and inflict tremendous pain up close with autocannons. Its firing speed bonus helps it almost catch up to pulse lasers in terms of sheer damage to range, and with its tracking and ability to choose its damage type it performs far better against smaller vessels, but a Vargur pilot must always be aware of his situation and his ammunition.

When taking a closer look though, the tremendous pain it is said to dish out isnt as tremendous, as only 4 of the 7 highslots can be fitted with weps (turrets). Found out Marauder is also ment for salvaging.  :-\
Well, I am not getting a BS-class ship tuned down to a silly salvager I thought!

I came up with this setup, hoping to make it even more menacing (byebye cap  ;)).
What do you think of it? Is it silly or does it have potential?

EVE Online / BC setup, suggestions?
« on: December 09, 2008, 01:00:37 PM »
I made this setup for my hurri in EFT. Suggestions are more than welcome.

Known weaknesses:
- short range (although drones (30 m3) may change this, I don't expect much from the missiles)
- missiles - worth keeping or should i fit something else? energy lurkers maybe?
- capacitor: I can active shield tank for 1:27. Without it, cap is stable at 100%
- number of named modules, hard to come by??
- 3 low slots needed (i.e. lost) to get the rest up and running with power and cpu
- crappy shield tank?

thanks

Ok, in the general EVE topic this has come up, but thought I'd make a clean topic about it, so ppl willing to join this venture have all the info in one thread, without (too much) other mess in between.

First of all: Who would like to join this venture?

I will gather some info about it and put it in another post below.

Warhammer Online / The BSoDs are back in town
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:27:06 PM »
After 2 BSoD free days friday and saturday, they are back.
So far I have had several BSoDs almost everyday playing WAR. They also bothered me on my 2 weeks of WoW trial. EVE-trial didnt give problems.
The comp is almost 2 months old, so quite new.

System:
MSI P45 Platinum motherboard
Intel 8500 Dual Core processor
Asus 4850 512 MB videocard
2 x 2GB mem
onboard sound
520W power
Vista Premium 64bit

Windows points at ATI videocard as reason for the crashes.
Forums are littered with 4850 BSoDs, with just as many 'working' solutions given. I have tried some of em (that fit my mediocre computer knowledge), without results.
I can't explain why I had 2 BSoD free days, and why the BSoDs have come back.
BSoDs occur at different moments. They happen when idling, traveling, during combat etc. Although I have them more often than random when starting to type something in chat. Sometimes they happen every few hours, sometimes with ~30 mins intervals. Seems complete random. Sometimes they happen a few times after which I have a clear run for the rest of the day (i.e. 4-6 hours)

-It isn't the temperature of the videocard, it crashes even at temps in the 50's (Co)
-I have newest driver installed.
-I havent tried fooling around with IRQ settings yet (as proposed by Rubino)
-I havent flashed the BIOS yet (haven't (seen it) done before, so bit reluctant to do this), but some ppl on forums did, with diverse results (lot of em haven't seen change)
-Also havent tried flashing GPU-BIOS. Had a go at it, but also was reluctant to go ahead with this, for aforementioned reason. (reason for doing this was someone on forum mentioning voltage changing behavior (for powersaving) of 4850 might be a bit dodgy)

The .dmp files look like total gibberish for me and the event-viewer is littered with error messages and I don't know where to look for.

If someone has a suggestion, feel free  ;)
Especially Vac, who offered to have a go at it. Thanks for that!
