ok so heres some info totally breaching the NDA but as they are basically adding that final layer of polish and swatting the last bugs i see no harm ;)

A comment on the graphics before i post anything they are using cell shading that gives them a nice comic book look, also makes them a bit blurry on occasion but trust me in game they look fit for the genre.

Firstly Frameworks, these are your power sets or as you can see you can mix and match to create your own custom powerset, plus point of sticking to the 1 set is faster access to the higher tier powers but eventually any character can choose any power.
(http://inlinethumb64.webshots.com/28095/2170565090103493491S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2170565090103493491yuhrBa)

The character creation is pretty similar to COH's well why change what is pretty damn perfect ;)

As well as damaging/defensive/ CC powers etc you get Travel powers , those in COH will know what they are about although some of the old favourites are slightly different, as well as their being newer ones.

So as well as Flight, Super speed, Jumping, Teleportation (which is totally different to the way COH handles it) you get Fire flight (Human torch), Ice Sliding (Iceman), Hover Disc, Swingin (not seen that one so cant comment ;)  ) , Jet boots, and others that they seem to be adding on a weekly basis.

heres Hover Disc (looks better now they reskinned it, used to look like a flying Manhole cover hehe ) (and i wont mention the week they set its traction to 0 that was a fun week for testing :) stop.stop .stop .....feck im 1 mile away from where i wanted to be :D  )

(http://inlinethumb56.webshots.com/44855/2566332120103493491S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2566332120103493491iICrWP)

Another difference from COH is the introduction of Nemesis, at level 25 YOU design and create your own Super Adversary, your Nemesis, that is then used in a variety of misssions and gains in power as you do :) (not quite there yet so no screenies at the mo)

PVP is handled in an arena environment, the Hero Games as they are called are quite fun ( Melee orientated characters do suffer somewhat) and a fun break to missioning. Queing is simple and can be done anywhere to access games in your tier.

Instances are handled the same way ,in fact the same button allows both. So getting teams together is easy.

ok back in game to grab more screenies and decide what else to leak ;)

Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 16, 2009, 11:02:14 AM
ok didnt get anymore screenies last night seems they fed the hamsters elastic bands and it caused all sorts of shenanigans :) and i shant mention the mini beasts seems they let loose a shrinking ray on someof the none humanoid critters :D

Roles is another new addition from COH you unlock various roles by completing perks, some of the early ones are Defense (take 5000 damage), Offense (do 5000 damage). These allow you to equip powers that function as a type of buff, for instance Power Armour gets a power (name eludes me at the mo) which increases damage resists (51% at level 3)and has another power than can be purchased that allows it to add a  short term damage absorb as well, but can only be equipped in defense roles. Others get powers for Offense and support.

Crafting is also there as you do have equipment (of sorts) an Offense piece a defense piece and a utility piece each with 2 secondaries for 9 in all (these are your stat boosters), and 5 slots for items (things like summoning tomes. grenades, prototype guns that have limited life etc that add another strategy or use in missions). Crafting comes in 3 flavours Science, Arms, and Mystical allowing crafting of bags and various pieces of kit.

As i said they are pretty much polishing the game getting ready for release i see the smoothest release in a long time for an MMO and i have ordered my copy as i loves it :)

Post by: Caradir on July 16, 2009, 11:07:45 AM
p.s. my favourite power so far is the Gadgeteering power "prototype Blaster" has a "1% chance to inflict effect Teddy on target" bloody hilarious to watch a huge villain turn into a soft teddy and start wailing on you :D
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 16, 2009, 01:38:10 PM
ok realised i havent said anything about stats/combat :)

stats

Quote
Strength: Knockback, Knockback Resistance, Picking stuff up, Throwing stuff.

Dexterity: Chance to crit, amount of damage avoided when you successfully dodge.

Constitution: Hit points, hit point recovery.

Intellect: Reduces the cost of all powers, Stealth detection, Pet DPS.

Ego: Crit Severity, Strength of hold effects, ability to free yourself from some holds.

Presence: Threat Scaling more in Offensive role, less in Defensive Role (more on these later) Also, some stuff for buff powers and pet HP.

Recovery: Equilibrium, energy generated by your fighting attacks.

Endurance: Energy max, energy generated by your fighting attacks

Str really does let you throw big stuff ;)

(http://inlinethumb50.webshots.com/42289/2038541770103493491S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2038541770103493491ctQXCU)

Combat: so ill assume youve been twiddling you rthumbs for a minute or so and that means your Endurance is at its equilibrium amount (no power pool as such you get endurance)

The first power you pick at creation is your endurance builder - generally a light damaging ability that generates endurance (for power armour its Wrist Bolters does about 7-8 dps at level 1 and generates about 12 endurance ps)

Then every other power feeds off your endurance, increasing recovery and endurance increases charge rate and maximum endurance and ups your equilibrium value. So want to open up with that sweet Tier 3 power up Recovery so you have the Endurance to begin with.

Also you can activate powers together as long as they originate from differing body parts, Power armour probably has more locations than some of the more conventional power forms, so i usually start with Wrist Bolters (endurance builder, arms), Then my Laser Beams (eyes) and fially my Micro Munitions (Aoe Mini missiles :)  from chest) if i had chosen i could also have a Shoulder mounted mini gun that attacks in a cylinder, and i do also have my chest beam for utility (chest beam requires charging so turns off all other powers to use but does have a nice kb effect so i use it in PVP) so as you see i usually have 3 powers attacking at once and my endurance at max can handle this for about 12 secs before the missiles need to stop.

i also have my defensive build with the Invulnerable power (remembered its name :)  ) which improves  resists passively, and for balanced role i use nanite regeneration (i think :) from the gadgeteering line, which gives endurance every time a power comes off cooldown)

Another thing to note is leveling up, when you level you get 1 of 3 things , a new power, new stats (think backgrounds for your hero that improve stats i.e. Politician gives + INt and presence) or points to improve powers either for upgrading tier (each power has 3 tiers) or by bolting on additions (to make them unique to you, such as the gadgeteering Prototype Gun can have a chance at instant kill (doesnt work on super villains +  )or the chance that powers give endurance on ending leading to many tactics which i imagine will be looked into and discussed at length upon release)

The game isnt perfect, by far , but as im sure you see im quite excited by it and as i said previously its looking like a fairly problem free release if they keep going, rumours are open beta in 3-4 weeks so keep eyes peeled if interested ;)

Does it have quest/mission helpers and all that retarded Bullshit that is endemic in MMO's as played by the mouthbreathing set these days?

In fact, how is levelling - grind or quest mainly, is there pvp (and if so instanced ala bg/scenarios or actually good old open world)?

Obviously if you cannot answer due to NDA then I'll wait until I find leaks on the other forums I inhabit :)
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 16, 2009, 04:27:52 PM
leveling is mostly due to quests killing anything below an arch villain gives few xps, PVP is arena team based (HERO games) and open (BASH championship) they are still tweaking the PVP side of things.

ive already breached the NDA with the info ive given and the screenies so a little extra isnt going to matter ;)

questing comes in the form of standard quests from quest givers, to PQ type, to random people running up to you in the street asking for help to stumbling across "Bank Raids" etc whilst exploring.

1 of the chains in Millenium city i liked is from a bloke in China town who has misplaced his red truck ;) all his missions are based on a certain movie :D
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Mangala on July 16, 2009, 04:42:51 PM
Like the sound of the missions especially theming, but "arena" just put me off pvp and I so liked the idea of FFA pvp (The championship sounds like it has rules to protect the retarded... :( and tbh the only rule they need is one saying "CTRL Q if you dont like it").

*The evil instanced and rules based pvp hating side of me may be out to play right now ;)
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 16, 2009, 04:47:04 PM
gods no no rules if you have a power it does what it says, BASH is FFA played over a cityscape map ,as i said before melee is next to impossible in PVP they usually only have a few powers to ground fliers and dont always work ;) the arenas are fun (cage match ;)  )  my only gripe about PVP is the dicks who leave as soon as they start losing, yet stay till the end if winning irritates me.

didnt try it out too many rubber bands on hamsters to try it (as it was just added last  night ;)  )  also plans for a PVP scenario where groups take opposing sides in a prison break scenario sound fun, turrets and all.

I like this. It'll be cool if you can switch out of different roles through the course of the game. Try you hand at tanking and healing and such.

Probably wouldn't happen, but would be cool.

10 days till my beta key arrives! ;D
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 23, 2009, 11:46:38 AM
you can save different roles setups for your toon and its a simple press of button (f keys) to swap roles (90 sec cooldown once swapped)  although not all power sets get passives for all roles, but then you can select from other sets nowt stops you ;)

How do the roles work on a group basis?
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 24, 2009, 04:20:31 PM
the way i see it is main/off tanks would go defense, dps -offense and healers/CC go support roles but a si said previously switching is easy in combat, just a button press with a 90sec cd effect between switching roles.

you save roles per character on a per role gear basis.
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Mangala on July 24, 2009, 04:22:02 PM
Isnt there a danger in this role switching, that people will feel a need when away from actual group content to just solo all the time?
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Caradir on July 28, 2009, 09:56:50 AM
whilst soloing is a possibility depending on area, there is a nice selection of team missions (without it briniging a halt to the fun) and the PQs arent soloable at level (unless using the OPd power armour set (hehe nerf incoming i sense) and are more fun in a group anyways) The crisis zones, and strongholds  require groups to get most from them. I did attempt a 5 man area in Canada ( at -2 the recommended level)  and got about half way through and only died a few times , but then i am using Power Armour (did i say it was currently OPd ? :D  ) ( i did add repair bots from gadgeteering to keep me alive that long though)

but things have just changed this weeks patch is 1Gig in size ( and no patch notes yet available) O.o they really are getting ready for the masses now.

p.s. nerf Power armour plx ty (PVP is horrid at the mo easily 75% are using Power armour not because its fun , like me, but simply to win).

an FYI for those coming in on Sat ill set up a chat channel as soon as i get in on friday and post here so we can chat when on, and maybe try setting up a SG to see what the ui for thats like (SG creation needs 5 bodies though)

and a little info ;)  during the tutorial there are a few "hidden" missions search them out to finish your first perk (unless you kill lots in which case that one will be first :)  )

i was going to tell where they are but half the fun is finding these things for yourself :D

I'm a little confused since on the launcher it says "server up" but when I actually try playing the game it tells me "You're not allowed to log in at this time"

its said that for all the time ive been in beta :)

btw wednesdays patches are usually buggy as hell, just FYI :D

im hoping they at least sorted the power armour, wrist bolter issues no fun fighting when your endurance builder doesnt build endurance, and hit the animals in Canada with a growth ray as they are miniature at the moment and damn hard to see ,lol, if somewhat funny.

Whether you purchase six months or the lifetime, you'll gain access to the Star Trek Online beta launching later this year -- according to said offer. Both options also come with an exclusive art deco costume set, although we're far more interested in that first bonus. However, lifetime subscribers are also rewarded with a retro future costume set, a mirror universe outfit (given at launch) for Star Trek Online, an in-game Foxbat action figure and eight additional character slots.

Shame i wont touch STO as its already going to be pvplite or even pvpless, and sacharine sweet - oh and levelbased...  Scifi is better than levels :)

Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Kurtt on August 05, 2009, 09:57:33 PM
Posted this over on the CO beta forums, so C&Ping it here:

Ok, got a good couple of hours in, so heres my thoughts on the game so far. Just want to say that I recently started playing CoH too, so I have high hopes for this game.

Firstly, the Pro's:

Character creator is awesome. Actually managed to get the two heroes I created to look better than their CoH counterparts. Lots of options, but not too overwhelming. Thought there may be a few more, but adding capes/wings/back slot stuff from the get go makes up for all that

Combat is fast and fun, even with the perceived dullness of spamming an endurance builder. I chose Force for my first powerset, and really enjoyed the fwoomphyness of it. Love how you can run around while spamming Force Bolt.

Controls are good. Started with keyboard and mouse, which is run-of-the-mill mmo stuff tbh. Then switched over to a 360 pad, and was pleasantly suprised how much more fluid combat seemed to become. I kept switching back and forth between K+M and pad over the 2 or so hours I played, and found myself leaning toward the pad. Only gripe with it is the tool tips that pop up don't correspond to the actual buttons, but I expected that with the lack of pad support.

Died a few times, but overall didn't find the experience too taxing or to simple, so thats good. Enjoyed some of the humour of the missions (Furley anyone?) and also though the voice acting was very cool for some of the parts of the tut and later Canada. I got my main to level 9 with no real effort, and tbh, I didn't even watch the XP bar, so every ding was a suprise, which was always good. Also, performance was ok for me, despite it being a Wednesday patch.

Ok, now the con's:

My biggest, and probably only gripe with the game so far, is the instancing. Having to be asked to choose an instance everytime I zone started to niggle me, and I see this getting even more annoying as I continue to play. Now, I appreciate that this is required for having one server, but I feel it destroys immersion to a degree (lord, can't believe I just said that!), and I can't help but wonder how this will effect the community in terms of hanging around and chatting with other players, as mmo players are wont to do (Atlas Park, Org/IF/Dal etc). Also, how will I know where to find my bro's toon (who is also in the beta) or some of my guildies? Make sure we synch our instances over vent?

The only other annoying thing was the character creation screen popping back to the previous step whenever you make a change, but I'm sure that bug will get squashed soon enough.

So, basically, I suffered no bugs while playing, had a thoroughly enjoyable time (apart from the above con), and will more than likely be buying a lifetime sub in the near future.

Hope some of the above helps

Eve doesnt do that.

Tabula Fail did that and thats one of the reasons it failed :(

Exchange rates suggest i'll life time this - fire and forget style of MMO payment, even if my play waxes and wanes really often, it has spandex.  But FUUUU amazon.

Im very used to one server, no instancing stuff - what can I say EVE has me spoiled.  As you say the pro's outweigh it, but it will always be there at the back of my mind, however the only thing i let put me off games are their official forums - if I can avoid them, Im all set.

Tbh, the CO forums are full of whiney beta vets, so its best to avoid them. Even so, the 3 or so hours I spent with it today, got me hooked. This'll be my gaming bread and butter till TOR hits for sure.
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Gunnarr on August 05, 2009, 11:42:51 PM
I'm not quite as convinces as Kurtt yet. Then again, superhero-games have never been quite my cup of tea, and in any case Champions has not bored me yet after 3 hours of playing, like COH.

Also, the character creation was awesome. No surprise there - it already was in COH. Still, being able to pretty much create whatever you cooked up in your little twisted brain without feeling you had to make too many concessions is very nice! The ability to create your own Nemesis to battle the rest of your career against is also cool. So, as a storytelling game, I'll have to give it high marks.
And ok, I admit, it was fun enough that I fired up photoshop, searched the web for fonts that resembled the ones used in the CO sigs, and wasted a few hours making my own. That has to count for something! ;)

Still, I'm not convinced. My main concerns are these:
1) I haven't seen a lot of innovative gameplay. Ok, ok, I've barely finished the tutorial, but most of the quests seemed the generic kill this, gather a couple drops, bring item X to the park at the other side of town, kill 50 wolves - ah no. That last one was LotRO. :P
2) From what I heard most stuff is can be solo'd. On the beta forums they're basically saying that "you can do whatever you want, but if you don't min/max you won't be able to solo 5-man content". Wtf? So why did they make it a MMO at all? (Probably so you can show your wonderfully original superhero to the world, I'm guessing...)
3) Garry managed to get his toon at 35 within a few months time, playing around 10 hours a week at most (because they shut the beta server down a lot) for perhaps 2-3 months. The game has a total of 50 levels.
They better hurry up with providing endgame content at this rate!

I thought the look of the game was cool by the way. It took some getting used to, but it surely complemented it by providing a very cartoony look. One strange thing - it seemingly caused me to get a slight notion of motion sickness, something I very rarely used to have when playing first/third-player computer games, but haven't had since before wow's first expansion. Funny, experiencing that again as MMO-veteran. ;)

Is there a "good" and "bad" o the characters, ie factions? or is it more of a heroes versus each other style thing, so alignment doesnt really matter?

None yet, and the pvp is done in an Olympic games style.

Yeah, they have great character customisation options but I don't actually like that!
Don't really want to spend ages designing the look of my toon.

It really does sound like an updated CoH with shiner graphics.

Think I might save my cash now and wait for Batman Arkham Asylum to come out - looks like I will get my Superhero fix that way.

it really is nothing like COH its more fun ;)

No factions JOn action is against the various Villain groups with the main story being the possible return of Dr Destroyer who destroyed Detroit which Millenium City was built on the remains.

various villains are

VIPER ;- they are trying to perfect a super soldier serum, they created GROND if youve seen him in the desert.

Telios:- geneticist sees himself as the perfection of man and surrounds himself in clones of himself and robotic dinosaurs :)

gadroon :- alien frogmen trying to terraform the planet for themselves, they have annoying gravity powers

Mechanon ;- robot who hates life. go to snake gulch in the desert and fight the robotic cowboys at the old amusement park.

and many many more from the new purple gang, to chinese triads, to ghosts and demons, basically if theres a comic book stereotype bad guy good chance its in there and somemore :)

instance list used to show any of your friends SG members that were in each instance, seems to be removed in yetsterdays patch hopefully this will return as your point is valid and beyond typing in chat "im in MC #5" etc and then everyone switching to that version of MC no ther way of sorting these things out. not played wit it too much in groups to see how thats affected.

well thats what Ironclad (one of the Champions) is.

no specific alien soldier background but there is Military training and im sure with imagination you could mix it up with some of the others to get the desired results.

So basically you could be this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar-Vell).

I stopped reading superhero comics many years ago, and I rather thought my interest in the spandex crew had ended. I enjoy comics though, and pick up various things now and then. I started collecting Marvel's Annihilation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annihilation_(comics)) and sort of rediscovered superheroes slightly, in a cosmic space opera kind of way.

So, you know, alien soldier with superpowers on Earth...
Title: Re: Champions Beta
Post by: Kurtt on August 07, 2009, 10:12:54 AM
Well, considering theres oodles of options in the Character Creator, including alien faces and whatnot, I'd say yes, definately.

Also bare in mind you can use a custom framework, so basically mix and match any of the powers from any framework to get the exact hero your after.

Tell you what, I'll have a go at making an Alien Super Soldier-esque character over the weekend and post up a screenshot afterward. If you have any look and feel reuqests, post here :)

Well, after the weekend test I'm even more sold on this if I'm honest.

Test phase started ropey, with annoying targeting bugs, but they hotfixed it pretty rapidly and it went smoothly from then on.

In fact, I liked it so much, I ordered a new graphics card today in anticipation for release ;D

i imagine in the style of MMOs there will be another wipe 7-10days before launch and those who have preorder will get early access.

Well, I reay enjoyed last nights session.

Did anyone who got in notice how much more challenging everything seems to be? Seems they've slightly nerfed some passive defences and upped the toughness of the mobs across the board.

Still fun though. And I noticed a nice layer of polish to boot.

i was thinking things had been beefed up Henchmen werent much different but Villains + really did notice beefed up damage etc

got killed a few times running around the prison in MC by Hitmen they really hurt if you dont block there sniper shot attack, where as before i could easily handle anything they threw at me.

The game is polishing up fine i imagine open beta will focus on balancing issues and server stability.

no servers yet for todays test

Quote
Due to a connectivity issue, we are currently unable to launch the regular playtest on time as announced. This sadly will cause a delay in the start of the playtest. As soon as we have an ETA we will update you all!

What the **** is their ****ing problem, they can have the ****ing servers up all ****ing week long and no one can play but, when the ****ing servers are supposed to be open to test they cant get the god damned things online until 2-3 hours after the ****ing fact. This is ****ing an unacceptable problem this close to launch.
