There are many weapon systems in EVE. The main weapons types all have two variants: Close Range & Long Range. As I said in channel last night, I'll pop this post up explaining the type's. I shall stick to Tech 1 for now as Tech 2 gets slightly different.
Hybrid Weapons
Hybrid's have 1 close range type of guns and 1 long range type. However within that, they have ammunition types that dictate range again for them at Tech 1.
Long Range:
Railguns
Close Range:
Blasters
Hybrid Tech 1 Ammunition:
High Damage, Low Range
Antimatter
Plutonium
Uranium
Thorium
Lead
Iridium
Tungsten
Iron
High Range, Low Damage

Lasers
As with Hybrids, Lasers can use different types of crystals that change range and damage amount even more than specific type of laser do.
Long Range:
Beam Lasers
Close Lasers:
Pulse Lasers
Laser Ammunition:
High Damage, Low Range
Multifrequency
Standard
Radio
Low Damage, High Range
(some types missing as I am still skilling into Lasers)

Missiles
Long Range:
Standard Missiles (Used in both Standard Launchers & Assault Launchers)
Heavy Missiles
Cruise Missiles
Short Range:
Rockets
Heavy Assault Missiles
Torpedos

Defender missiles?

Forgot about those. Used to shoot down incoming missiles. Not really worth it to be totally honest.
