EVE Online / Alliance - IRC
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:25:00 PM »
OOoo - I wasn't sure I was supposed to see this forum so I'd not looked.

Shiney...

Ok - I've spoke with 2 of their named contacts so far - just a general chat.
They asked that I contact Oldma (ingame) and also send an email to their application email account (attached to next post).
I have their contacts in my address book which is open - so I can see when they're online.

The application process involves an inteview on Vent (time to be arranged when I chat with Oldma in-game) with Oldma and I guess some other funkies.

Regarding forum Opsec - I've PM'd Beo to ask for an email address I can mail the module to.

EVE Online / New NPC AI: W-Space

From dev comments (here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=917074&page=18#517):

Originally by: libertarian coleThis whole thread makes me depressed....
The way I see it is NPCs in their current form create the middle class of EVE. Yeah sure some people can make a killing off of moon mining, scams, market alts, or running a corporation; but NPCs allow the average joe type
player to make a decent living. You will give players experience at PvP that they will then be unable to participate in because of the new costs in PvE.

As I stated above, the loot rewards are being balanced to the new difficulty. Also you seem to be ignoring the statement that these new AI are only going to be on wormhole NPC's.

So brand new NPC's with new AI. This isn't changing the amount of isk a mission runner gets from doing missions.

So I don't see where your fear is coming from. If and I stress IF we deploy this to the rest of NPC then of course the rewards would be balanced against the diffaculty so the Average "The Plumber" Joe won't see a significant change in the amount of isk/ time reward.

Yes with the new AI there may be only 2 ships in the spawn, but it might take you 20 min to kill them. But you would get the same reward as if you spent 20 min killing 15 ships.

I hope this resolves some of your fears.

So what are we thinking of here? Is this something we'd like to take advantage of?
Do we want to setup something in a system we find?

Filling in from the discussion in this thread (just a start by no means complete):

EVE Online / Eve: Lag (solved)
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:14:53 AM »
The past few days I've been having lag with eve.  With the storms here affecting the power & phone I thought it just was a problem of waiting it out.
The storms passed and I was still having problems.  I ran chkdsk (the power problems caused my machine to randomly shutdown/reboot) and didn't find any issues.
Having recently installed SP1 I thought it might be related but the search engines didn't reveal any problems reported with Eve and SP1.

The lag appeared to focus around problems with using the market, docking/entering space & jumping between regions - using contracts, fitting & using the hanger was fine.
Using the market was weird - I would lag out for 1-2 mins and the market looked like it was doing a double refresh.  Clicking on an item would hang the interface (I couldn't do anything else with the eve interface or even switch to the Windows desktop) - after a minute the information would appear and then it would hang for another minute and the information would refresh again.

I started to think it might be permissions related - related to something that had changed with installing SP1.  I was starting to think about reinstalling Eve when I decide to move the CCP folder in User/<username>/AppData/Local to the desktop - so I could move the settings after a fresh install.  Just to try, I ran Eve again - (without the settings so it would recreate the settings and hence fix any permissions problems) - and my issues disappeared.

I still have some investigating to do but it appears that it's either permissions or some part of the settings became corrupt.

EVE Online / Evemon & Plans
« on: January 23, 2009, 05:04:04 PM »
If you're like me and don't turn off/reboot your computer often - you may notice, if you have more than a handful of plans, that the timelines displayed when you use the Plans -> Manage don't update.
Although opening a plan will cause evemon to recalculate the skills and timeline.

It's more of an issue when you have plans that contain related skills that you've recently trained.  If you stop and start evemon - then it'll recalculate the duration of the plans and the timeframes it displays will me accurate again.

I usually create a master plan when I'm looking at a new ship or mid-term target - and then from that break out parts into smaller plans (ie supporting or gunnary skills needed) - you can (and I often do) end up with a handful of plans that all require the same dependancy - which I'll train up first.

When a chunk of skills have been trained - if you restart evemon these plans are suddenly complete or be almost complete - which is a nice surprise :)

The Dog & Duck / Current Project
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:59:38 AM »
Hi guys,

I'd appreciate it if you would take a look at the following and provide some constructive feedback on something I am currently working on.
This following is very broad brush and some details are missing - but essentially it's complete.

Technical Background
I'm currently working on what is essentially an asset management engine.  It's a generic engine that allows temporary assignment of assets to be rented for pre-defined periods.
The first incarnation of the engine will be a system designed around restaurants - specifically allowing restaurants to find/attract booking during the quieter/more competitive days of the week.
Restaurants in this context are the suppliers.  Customers are users who are visiting and looking for an offer.

Business Proposal background
Restaurants are expensive places to run and they need to ensure they have enough booking or covers - to ensure that they are in profit.
Like many businesses their main expenditure is premises, people and high-value stock (which for restaurants would be things like wine).  While one of the main components that generate income is food - it's generally not one of their main expenses.

Cities have multiple regions or districts.  Restaurants tend to deliver a type of cuisine (Italian, Chinese, etc).

The interface for both customers and suppliers will be simple and intuitive to use and operate.  It is important that suppliers can quickly, easily and intuitively interact with the site.
The interface for customers should be clean & bold.  It should feel interactive and "current" with modern internet standards.  It should be clean and usable by those in the target age/income brackets.
The target customer audience are those in their early 20's to the mid 60's and it's intended to be use by city residents as well as people visiting (tourists).

The supplier interface should additionally provide them with business tools that allow them to manage their product in the content of the market they are in.  Essentially this means providing some business analysis tools that allows them to see how their offering profiles against others in the same market.

Initially the system would cover the area & district where I live (Barcelonetta in Barcelona) but it's designed to cover any number of cities and any number of districts within a city.
The site will be multilingual in design and support all European languages.  Ideally each city will be in both English and the local native language.  This would allow the site to be usable by tourists as well as locals.
The design is such that I expect other cities to be covered and managed by people other than me - as such the administration of the site would allow the city owner to manage their city themselves.
They would be able to have an "overview" of their city in terms of coverage, clients, users, etc.

Business Proposal
The system I am developing will be a web based application - essentially a website - that allows restaurants to connect to customers to attract customers throughout the week with specials aimed at generating more business.
Initially the website would be accessible via the internet, mobile phone or WebTV - all known as the "Web Interface".  Later the website would be accessible via SMS and telephone (via touch dialling).

Customers would visit the website and search for restaurants in their neighbourhood (or city region), a type of cuisine, or within a budget range.  The system would allow customers to book a table through the website.

Restaurants would manage their offers by logging in and using the web interface. They would be able to create offers based on the size of the table (i.e. for 4 or 6 people), a theme (romantic meal, etc), day of the week, etc
They would be able to make offers which wouldn't initially be visible and to enable/disable offers.  They would be able to create an offer and using the business management tools - see how the offer compares to others within their market sector - against those currently known on the site - and other restaurants that the site has harvested from other internet sources.  (This means that the system will connect to other websites and profile restaurants for the purpose of allowing clients to profile their offering against the current markets in their city).

The system would allow customers to book a table at a restaurant - and the system would send a confirmation SMS both to the customer and to the restaurant.
Users would be able to "opt in" to specials via email/SMS/RSS from a specific restaurant or from anything that is searchable via the search interface (cuisine, region, etc).

The design also allows for a "White Label" approach - where restaurants can make their own website which will run and "hook into" the engine.  This allows them to have their own web presence (their own domain name, theme, design, etc) which uses the information that has already entered for a delta cost above the service cost.

City Financial model
This is a tricky one and I'm not set on the best approach yet.
The options are for a per-booking fee or a period fee (monthly, 3 monthly, annual) and probably payable by the restaurant.
Income would also be generated from the "White Label" implementation and would be an annual cost.

"Master" financial model
For me this is clearer cut and the aim is to reward those who put effort and time into making their city successful.
10-15% of the income generated by the city would be used for marketing for that city and then city owners would be entitled to 75% of the remaining income generated by their city.
While the marketing budget is fairly small by industry standards - the architecture of the site is designed so that it is self-promoting in an internet sense.  This means that the site is designed for optimal SEO and SER.

The remaining 25% of each city would go to a central pool.

The central pool would be used for operating costs to pay for hosting, general marketing.  Of any remaining income 75% would go to the designer & maintainer (i.e. me :)).
The remaining 25% would be divided up, every 3 months, and paid to city owners.

I know many of you are business focussed - so don't be too harsh!

EVE Online / Fighter Production Tracking
« on: January 21, 2009, 03:28:30 PM »
Attached is a spreadsheet that covers the production of fighters, listing their mineral requirements based on the current BPC's we have.
You may need to enable the option & authenticate - but it should automagically pulls the latest prices from the Corp Mineral Purchase Programme thread here.
Otherwise you can manually update the Minerals tab and change/update the prices yourself.

EVE Online / Concord Response Times
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:11:05 AM »
Found this gem again in the forums.
This is how long you can expect concord to turn up based on the sec level of the system:

Quote
These are averages only

.05 10-18 sec.
.06 10-14 sec.
.07 8-12 sec.
.08 6-10 sec.
.09 5-8 sec.
1.00 *4-7 sec.

Twenty tests in each Security, all done at the Sun.
*NOTE: in 1.00 I actually had LOWER times, like 2 seconds but I believe it was because they were near by. For this reason I did 25 tests in 1.00.

EVE Online / Electronic Warfare (EW) ships
« on: January 20, 2009, 05:32:27 PM »
Lifted from the forums but a good summary of EW, specifically the recon ships:

Quote
Falcon/rook: prevent enemy from targetting anyone in your own gang/fleet. Awesomely useful, especially with this ship (the kitsune is handy too).
Curse: Energy thief. No energy, not tank, as someone else said. And in the case of amarr, gallente, and some caldari, no guns either. Vicious if used right.
Rapier/huginn: webber/warp disruptor boats. Prevent the enemy from escaping if they're buggered, and provides you with the ability to gain a confirmed kill rather than a damaged target.
arazu: shorten enemy targeting distance. Forces the enemy to have to get close to you. Handy if you want to remove snipers and ranged ships from the fight. combine this with jamming on the close ranged ships, and it becomes real nasty for the enemy.

All in all, useage of at least one of each of the above, if not multiples can be a real winner. You still need stuff like interceptors and so on, as well as some DPS boats, but these ships can really turn the tide if used correctly.

EVE Online / Rorqual - Capital Industrial Ship
« on: January 20, 2009, 10:31:55 AM »
Wotcha guys,

I've been thinking about the Rorqual over the past couple of weeks and wondering if the risk/benefit warrents the ship.

The CCP Dev blog about it is: http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=490
The followup forum posts at the end of the dev blog give some insightful info - especially the 2nd and 3rd links.

The Wiki is: http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Rorqual

Due to the nature of the Ship Maint Bay (only allowing industrial ships & haulers) on the Rorqual and it's drone capacity - I don't see much of a role deploying it outside of friendly waters.  In unfriendly space the chance of a hostile group jumping your mining op, having only 5 drones and no combat ships for defence (maybe only the cyno ship as support) means you're putting a 1.7b Rorqual, 0.5b of mining ships (4 x Hulks) and any ore you've mined (4 hours x 4 Hulks mining Crystalline Crokite will generate around 0.5b).

The main benefit of the ship comes from compressing ore (via ore compression BP's) in belt and it's cargo storage (Cargo, Corp Hangers and the Hidden Cargo of the undelivered compression jobs) - and while this optimises the mining op - if you're in friendly waters then you're not going to be too far from a safe POS - in which case, from a cost/benefit perspective, it would be better to use the Orca.

Any thoughts?
